The Entrepreneurial Heart

The Entrepreneurial Heart

Today, I want to talk about the real magic behind becoming a successful entrepreneur – listening to your entrepreneurial heart. Trust me, it's not just a beat; it's a powerhouse that propels you through the inevitable ups and downs of your journey. It's important to find, embrace, listen and nurture this entrepreneurial heart of yours and that's what I want to dive into in this post.

Finding Your Entrepreneurial Heart

Let's kick off this adventure by finding that entrepreneurial heart of yours. It's that little voice within that guides you through thick and thin. It's your inner compass navigating you through the chaos of life. In the midst of daily craziness and the world's myths about entrepreneurship, we often misplace it.

The world likes to share a constant stream of false stories that make us think the rare multi-billionaire, twenty-something, is the norm. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Remember, the entrepreneurial journey is a winding road, not a straight path. Your entrepreneurial heart is your guide; it's the little voice of confidence that says:

  • "You can do this!" -- A voice of confidence pushing you forward, even when the road gets tough. Your main source of strength is your dogged determination.
  • "You are good enough!" -- Drowning out the doubting gremlins, reminding you of your worth.
  • "That's a great idea!" -- Celebrating the uniqueness of your own vision, even when the world thinks you're crazy. Don't forget that every great business in the world started as a crazy idea at first.

Listening to Your Entrepreneurial Heart

Once you've found it, lend an ear to the voice within. It's the guardian of your purpose and the keeper of all you believe in. In my own journey, I've stumbled when I've failed to listen to that voice. When I lost my passion for the work I was doing, I stopped listening.

This happens to all of us at one time or another. We all face it.

When you feel lost and drained, it's time to stop, listen, and reconnect. You will hear your entrepreneurial heart when you sit quietly and listen.

You will:

  • Hear it when you remember why you started your business, recalling the excitement of your initial dream.
  • Hear it when you remember the impact your business has on your community and the problems you're solving every day.
  • Hear it when you acknowledge the freedom to live life on your terms.
  • Hear it when you stomp out and crush the negativity that finds its way in on a bad day.

Crush Negativity to Feed Your Entrepreneurial Heart

Let's be real—entrepreneurship isn't a walk in the park. It's a journey filled with hard work and dreams buffeted by external forces that you have no control over, like the economy.

When things aren't easy, negativity can creep in and dim your hope. I've seen businesses spiral into the ground unnecessarily when entrepreneurs lost hope.

Your job is to crush negativity, recognize that you're not alone, and remember, it's okay not to have all the answers.

Support for Your Entrepreneurial Heart

Many entrepreneurs feel isolated, like lone warriors on an island. The truth is, we all face similar challenges when scaling our businesses.

You're not alone. Each of us has:

  • Experienced cash flow hiccups.
  • Wondered where the next customer would come from.
  • Felt the business owning us, instead of the other way around.
  • Struggled with team building and accountability.
  • Felt scared to invest in a new piece of equipment or key employee.

...and the list goes on.

The point is, you need to build a support system that includes other entrepreneurs that get it. Consider joining a mastermind or a group where entrepreneurs understand "the heart of the entrepreneur." The key to finding, feeding and supporting your entrepreneurial heart lies in entrepreneurs supporting entrepreneurs. Nothing else will work.

In Conclusion

Entrepreneurial success is more than just learning the ropes of business. It's about investing your heart and soul into your life's work.

As Seth Godin wisely said, "Studying entrepreneurship without doing it… is like studying the appreciation of music without listening to it." The same can be said about the "heart of the entrepreneur" -- you can't find it in a book or a class. You'll only find it by using it each day and nurturing it for the powerful guide that it is.

Use it daily and share it with like-minded entrepreneurs. Enjoy every moment of your entrepreneurial journey. Soar, don't settle.

Absolutely a great article! At times we allow our road to be paved by others when our lack of experience or feeling being unsure shakes the very vision that got us there. That inner voice is powerful and many times right, we just have to keep listening to it and not let that other NOISE drown it out.

Excellent points made Thomas Ulbrich. Lovely article! Not only at the beginning, but throughout the journey of an Entrepreneur, (s)he needs to keep listening to that heart. It’s easy to get overwhelmed in the day to day problems and problem-solving that businesses continue to throw at us. That single ‘reason’ why we started in the first place is enough to ground us and keep us going!

Felt it at 22 years old when I bought an east side bar/restaurant and continues today in my own insurance business. Sometimes lonely, sometimes scary, sometimes the doubt creeps in, always worth it in the end!
