Whether you’re pondering those first steps to your own entrepreneurial venture or whether you’ve been in the entrepreneurial game for a while now, every soon-to-be or established entrepreneur is plagued by excuses (whether we like to admit it or not). How do we spot these destructive dialogues? We delve into some of the most used entrepreneurial excuses:
I just don’t have the money right now.
The opposite has actually been found to be true when it comes to entrepreneurial success; the companies who were forced to limit expenses and prioritise certain things due to financial constraints showed much greater profit margins compared to companies with ample start-up capital.
What if I fail?
When endeavouring on something new there is always risk involved; getting married, buying your first house, buying the new brand on sale that promises to “taste just like Marmite”. A new business venture is no different. An entrepreneur’s success is based on taking calculated risks, having the courage to face challenges head-on and to get up and learn from every mistake you make along the way.
I just don’t have the time.
Many a dream and a start-up dies when this phrase is uttered. This usually happens when you’ve been forced to start your business after-hours and part-time whilst having a full-time job. The sad truth is that studies have shown that these entrepreneurs usually still clock ‘round about 10 -20 hours in television watching every week. You need to make a mind-shift and some sacrifices in order to build the business of your dreams.
I need to be available 24/7.
If you want to be heading for complete burn-out, yes. It’s impossible to be available for every phone call, every e-mail, every meeting etc. You need to set aside very specific times for admin and organisation. If not, it will soon eat into time that is much more productively spent on the bigger picture stuff. If at all possible, it’s always better to employ someone who can take care of these kind of duties.
I don’t know where to start.
This is where it becomes important to find a mentor and start following in the footsteps of giants.
