Enterprise Security is Broken (but it can be fixed)

In the war on data breaches, defenders are losing. The first step is admitting that there is a problem. Today's security is no match for network attackers, as the average time to discover an intruder is 5+ months. Motivated attackers will get into your network. The best pen testers will guarantee that they get in within two days. 

So why can attackers easily bypass preventative security? Can they be detected if they are already inside at work exploring the network, extending their position and taking control of assets?
