ENTERPRISE CONTENT MANAGEMENT: MEETING THE KEY CHALLENGES

You might have heard some experts speculating about the death about enterprise content management services and being replaced by term content services, but as of now there is no decisive ringing of death bell we could hear. Enterprise content management is still there to cater to content needs of companies and they only became more equipped and better. The emergence of cloud based ECM is an example of how content services continued to excel in strength and capacity. Cloud ECM is predicted to grow from USD 9.77 Billion in 2017 to a whopping USD 34.42 Billion by the year 2022.

But certainly, an array of challenges have surfaced for content management services meant for enterprises. Let us have a look at the key challenges encountered by enterprise content management services.

  1. Meeting budgeting constraints

ECM involves several budgetary considerations for effective output. In complete contrast to the challenges involved in relying with human resources, company needs to allocate budget for several elements including design, consultation, planning, implementing, testing, evaluation, training and improvement. Besides the cost incurred for consulting services, hardware and software a proper implementation of enterprise content management require upgrading infrastructure from time to time, professional value added services, quality manpower for planning and implementation, training and development, etc. All these together make a substantial cost overhead that enterprises need to bear.

2.“One Size Fits All” Approach does not Work

Though many so called self proclaimed ECM experts would say that for successful ECM implementation you need to stick to a particular vendors apps. In reality, different apps from different vendors can be suitable for different category of content needs. The same app for document management cannot be the ideal one for web content management. But deploying several different apps for content management is equally a challenging task for any enterprise IT.

3.Understanding Various Types of Data

Most enterprises deal with robust volume of data and all these do not come in any particular format. Information appear in all sorts of file formats making it more challenging for the enterprise IT to deal with the data storage and utilisation in different contexts. An ECM system must be well equipped to deal with various types of data and data formats.

4.Lack of Experienced and Talented Manpower

As the market is continuing to remain in a whirlwind of changes and competitive challenges, the priority also shifts from time to time. This is why bringing a project to fruitful output requires quality manpower output who with the skills, experience and vision can continuously create valuable contributions. New approaches and problem solving skills of IT thinkers and content strategists can help a company propel through the tough turf of competition.

5.Not focusing on Training And Development

However superior a ECM technology you subscribe and want to implement for your business, it won’t lead to any significant outcome if you do not have a trained manpower for implementation and management of a ECM successfully. While you cannot hire lot of trained manpower for your ECM implementation as it involves huge cost overhead, you need to keep pace with the emerging need of skills through a rigorous training and development process for building competency and skill in your inhouse employees.
