Enter the Cave
If you’ve ever experienced fear when you are pursuing a goal, you’ve discovered a valuable ally.
Because if you’re not scared as you move toward your dreams, then your goal isn’t big enough and you’re stuck in conformity.
But if you’re going for something that you don’t know how to do, your world is expanding and, at some point, you’re going to come face-to-face with the terror barrier.
This barrier is like an invisible wall we hit and then must go through before we can create a significant change in our lives. Our conditioned beliefs and paradigms will fight that new reality every step of the way, causing fear and anxiety to flare up every time we act on a goal that’s outside of our comfort zone.
I don’t care how big and strong or how well put together you are, when you hit the terror barrier, it’s a scary situation. But as Joseph Campbell so brilliantly put it, “The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.”
So, when you hit the terror barrier, take a deep breath, recognizing that you are on the right track. Then, keep moving forward, realizing that going through it leads to what you want.
-- Bob Proctor
When you hit the terror barrier, worry, doubt and fear can feel overwhelming. You might get a stomachache—your heart may even flutter. And there’s a good chance you’ll start making excuses about why you can’t or shouldn’t do what you really want to do.
However, when you understand what’s going on, it’s not as scary because you know what’s waiting on the other side. But that doesn’t mean you won’t get scared the next time you’re doing something for the first time.
The discomfort never goes away, but it becomes easier and easier when you take a few deep breaths and take a leap of faith that is based on understanding what is happening in your mind.
When you acknowledge the fear is an ally and crash through your terror barrier, you’ll look back and realize that your irrational and limiting beliefs were nothing but illusions in your mind.
Because as Bob and I always say, it’s not who you are that’s holding you back, it’s who you think you’re not. -- Sandy Gallagher
"God placed the best things in life on the other side of fear," says Will Smith in a great video on YouTube about his Sky Diving experience--and it is so true.
All the growth and success I have received has come because I knowingly, and willingly stepped outside of my comfort zone and did something new and it was scary.
What we need to understand about fear is how it affects our body. You may think fear is just a mental or emotional experience. It is also a very real, physical and visceral experience.
The cause of fear is a challenge to your current mindset. You mind is SET a specific way, one that has a physical manifestation in your neural pathways and the chemical state of your body. Complacency is predictable, and therefore safe. When you challenge that predictability, you are also neurally and chemically changing your body, and don't expect it to go down without some kind of fight.
This is why fear never goes away until the new state of being becomes the new normal. Because your neurology and chemical make up has been re-written, and you feel safe in that new normal. You changed! And change is growth.
But if you aren't growing, you're dying. Instead of calling this the Terror Barrier, I rather refer to it as phases of growth. So, is there something you want to do and are afraid? Are you going to choose to do it today so you can move forward and grow?
You should, because the best things in life are on the other side of fear!
