After a considerable hiatus, I am thrilled to rekindle my passion for writing and sharing my experiences. Throughout my entrepreneurial journey, I have often reflected upon the invaluable lessons learned and the mistakes made along the way. It has become a personal goal of mine to leverage these experiences and help other to navigate similar paths and avoid potential pitfalls.
The past three years have been a whirlwind of growth and challenges as I dedicated my efforts to expanding Ocha, Machi, Bubble Zone, and Pizza Oro before facing macro headwind that demanded swift strategizing and diversification of the business. Amidst these demanding circumstances, time for writing and reflection became scarce.
However, as the second half of 2023 began, I made a commitment to allocate dedicated time in my schedule to penning articles once again. Through these articles, I aim to share practical insights, strategies, and advice derived from my firsthand experiences. My sincere desire is to contribute to the collective knowledge and success of fellow entrepreneurs, aspiring business owners, and professionals alike.
Today, I start by delving into a topic that holds great significance for me and one that I have frequently advised other brands on over the past year - Selecting the right franchisees for your brand.
With Machi and Ocha, I have had the opportunity to work closely with over 20 franchisees, empowering me with invaluable insights into the dynamics of the franchisor-franchisee relationship. I have also been privileged to be invited to contribute to other Franchisors' selection process for their potential franchisees.
Through these experiences, I have come to realize that labeling franchisees as "good" or "bad" oversimplifies the intricate nature of this partnership. Instead, it is crucial to align the goals and characteristics of both the franchisor and the franchisee for a truly successful collaboration.
Below are three critical aspects that I believe are essential considerations for brands when seeking the right franchisee to forge a prosperous and harmonious partnership.
Level of Commitment
One crucial factor to consider when selecting a franchisee is their level of commitment to effectively manage the franchise. At Ocha, we prioritize franchisees who demonstrate unwavering dedication to the brand, as the nature of our operation processes necessitates a high level of commitment to uphold brand standards.
During our franchisee interviews, we thoroughly assess each candidate's commitment level and their willingness to uphold our brand's values going forward. This careful evaluation helps establish a strong foundation for achieving long-term success in the franchise partnership.
However, it is important to note that different brands may have varying requirements. Some more established or high-end brands may prioritize franchisees with strong financial resources and extensive networks, diminishing the emphasis on their operational commitment. Therefore, it is essential for brands to be clear on the specific qualities they are seeking in their franchisees.

Alignment with Established Systems and Processes:
Consistency is the bedrock of successful franchises, relying on a proven business model that ensures a consistent and valued customer experience. Therefore, it is crucial to exercise caution when considering franchisees who consistently propose new menu items or deviate from established systems and processes. While creativity is undoubtedly valuable, franchise success is rooted in replicating a proven formula and leveraging the brand's established processes and values, meticulously refined over time.
However, it is important to note that there may be slight discrepancies across different brands' expectations. At Ocha, for example, we place a high emphasis on strict adherence to our food and drink menu to ensure 100% consistency. In contrast, we embrace the flexibility for our Machi franchisees to introduce their own food menu, recognizing that the drink menu primarily serves as a convenience and franchisees may benefit from diversifying their offerings to increase sales.
By striking the right balance between adhering to established systems and allowing for appropriate customization, franchises can maintain a strong brand identity while still catering to the unique needs and preferences of their customers.
Passion for the Business:
Passion serves as the driving force behind a thriving business. Franchisees who lack genuine enthusiasm for the industry or the brand may struggle to meet the required standards and deliver exceptional customer experiences. Therefore, when selecting franchisees, it is crucial to identify individuals who love the business, its products, and its values. Such passionate franchisees are more likely to go the extra mile, inspire their team, and create a thriving operation. It is important for brands to be clear about the specific type of passion they seek in their franchisees.
For instance, at Ocha, we have a strict selection process that focuses on franchisees who are avid fans of the brand and truly understand our values. This ensures a shared commitment to upholding our brand's identity and providing an authentic experience to customers.
On the other hand, with Machi, we are open to franchisees who may not have prior experience with the brand but are passionate about running a small kiosk business. Their enthusiasm for entrepreneurship and commitment to creating a successful venture are the qualities we value in Machi franchisees.
The above three factors are deeply rooted in my personal experiences. In addition to these, there are three other commonly cited factors to consider when selecting franchisees. In my article next week, I will delve into these additional factors and provide valuable insights on selecting the right franchisees for a successful partnership.
