Ensuring Back-to-School Safety: A Collaborative Effort by Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and Area Schools

As the new academic year approaches, school safety is a top priority for Sheriff Chad Chronister and the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. teamHCSO has taken proactive steps to create a safer learning environment by partnering with schools in Hillsborough County. HCSO has implemented comprehensive safety measures that prioritize the well-being of everyone involved.

Strengthening School Security & Implementing Emergency Response Protocols

One of the primary objectives of the collaboration between HCSO and Hillsborough County schools is to strengthen campus security. Over the summer, School Resource Deputies went through an annual active threat training which simulated an active shooter situation.

"We want our teachers to focus on teaching, not the tactics," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "This very rigorous training they've attended is solely focused on one thing: if, God forbid, there is an active shooter situation at one of our schools, that we'll be able to stop and neutralize that threat."

School buildings and surrounding premises throughout the county are always being assessed to identify potential vulnerabilities. Through extensive risk assessments, HCSO offered valuable insights to improve infrastructure and fortify defenses against threats.

The Impact of School Resource Deputies

HCSO recognizes that safety goes beyond physical security. School resource deputies are actively engaging with students, parents, and school staff to promote awareness about safety measures, online safety, and reporting suspicious activities. This collaborative approach encourages a united effort in creating a secure educational environment.

School resource deputies forge meaningful bonds with students at schools, forming impactful relationships and often serving as role models for children in the community. These relationships foster trust and open lines of communication, making it easier for students to approach them with concerns or issues they might be facing.

School resource deputies serve as mentors and positive role models for students. They can provide guidance and support in various aspects of life, from making responsible choices to dealing with peer pressure and conflict resolution.

In terms of physical safety, in 2022, new shields and firearms were provided to SRDs to be used in case of an active shooter.

"When it comes to safeguarding the lives of the students at schools in Hillsborough County, we are preparing for every imaginable situation,"?said Sheriff Chad Chronister.?"We love our children, and these new shields will prepare our deputies in case there is ever an active shooter situation."
