Consumers who enroll in health insurance coverage by March 31, 2020 will have an April 1 start date and WILL NOT be subject to the state tax penalty. Reference the chart below for specific dates and whether consumers would be subject to the tax penalty for continuous months without coverage. Although consumers can now enroll through June 30 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they may be subject to months’ worth of penalty if they enroll on or after April 1. Consumers who want to avoid the penalty must enroll by March 31.
As a reminder, regardless of when consumers plan select, they must still effectuate their plan by paying their binder payment timely, per their selected carrier’s rules. Paying online is the fastest and easiest way to effectuate coverage, and ALL health carriers offer this option.
Please Note: COVID-19 cannot be used as a QLE to switch plans unless there’s another Report a Change to be made (such as a change in income due to being laid off as a result of COVID-19).
