Enough with the Bad Attitude!
Have you ever stood back and just listened to the conversations around you? How many of those are filled with complaints and negative comments? Do you ever find yourself taking part? I confess to being guilty of this, but in the last week I've noticed how I feel after these conversations. The "bad attitude" doesn't get me very far!
One of the things I love about biographies is learning that our heroes had bad days. With Elon Musk in Australia I've been reading up on his story and he had some difficult days which he obviously overcame. I'm sure the feelings that go along with those bad experiences remain, but he picked himself up and got on with the job.
Some days are just bad - could be with work, personal, family, friends, colleagues, project going wrong, no business coming in, staff member stuffing up, rejection from the latest board or job application - I could go on! But it's your choice what you do with that "bad day". You can choose to yell and scream (been there!) or you can take a breath, find a way through the problem and come out the other side.
Take a step back and think about those around you who appear not to be going anywhere. How's their attitude? Are they negative, always complaining, nothing is their fault, woe is me?
Now think about those around you who appear to be successful. How's their attitude? Are they positive, problem-solvers, doers, fixers, nothing to hard?
Which person do you want to be?
Most unique leaders are positive and bold and find a way through any problem. But we have our down days. On my most recent "down day" there were a few tears... (not as tough as I appear!) But I picked myself up and found a way through. I didn't let the bad attitude stick. I saw light at the end of the tunnel and decided there's obviously something better on the way! And I will make it happen.
I saw Vanessa Williams on an Oprah Masterclass (that's training right??) and she said that 90% is just showing up. She experienced many rejections and bad press in her day, but she kept showing up and we would consider her successful. Her tips:
- Success is the best revenge
- Tap into your support network
- Work hard, enjoying life and the moment
Next time you have a "bad day" remember you make a choice about how to handle the negativity. When you are with others complaining, you can turn the conversation around. Find a way through that problem and keep showing up!
