There is no "enkelf?hig" without integrity

We want to be enkelf?hig and create value for generations. As a company with a history spanning more than 260 years, we take the long-term view. What guides us, and what I know will keep us relevant also in the future, are our core values. One of them is acting and performing with integrity.

But what is "integrity"?

At the basic level, it means playing by the rules and complying with applicable laws. It means that our financial reporting is correct, that we honor our word, pay our taxes and do not offer anything to anybody to get an unfair advantage. It is non-negotiable.

But there is another aspect to integrity: doing what we believe in, and doing "the right thing," always. When a decision needs to be taken, we must, of course, have value creation for today and the best interest of the business in mind. But that is not all. Performing with integrity means that we make the decision that is fair, ethical and consistent with our value system. Because this is what will create value tomorrow and every day after tomorrow.

The commitment to "doing the right thing" starts with me and all the CEOs of our business units: we must lead by example and create the environment in which performance with integrity is possible.

But it must also involve everybody within the Haniel Group. Since it may not always be clear what "the right thing" is, we need to be able to have an open conversation about it. People must be comfortable to ask questions or raise concerns if they feel that something is going wrong. This transparency is our license to be at Haniel …. and our license to stay.

Compliance with our core values and behaviors, doing business with integrity, is everyone’s job, every day. It is the foundation for a sustainable business that is truly "enkelf?hig."

Integrity —> sustained long-term success —> #enkelf?hig , there is no shortcut, and it is the foundation to a healthy corporate culture with committed employees

In my almost 10 years in the Haniel Group, I have seen some CEO's come and go, but you, Thomas Schmidt, are really the first one for me who not only talks about #engelf?hig, but lives and, in my eyes, even more importantly, lets everyone participate, transports and brings it to life. #createvalue is not just an empty phrase, you can feel it, not only within the Haniel Group, but for everyone! Thanks for the inspiration! You definitely lead by example.

So right Thomas. It's really difficult to define always "the right things" in a world of different cultures and eco-systems. May be one good compass needle could be: "Don't hurt anyone!" Thx for inspiration.
