In Celebration of its 100th birthday, here are some interesting facts about Daylight Saving Time:

- First enacted by the federal government as a way to save coal during World War I in the spring of 1918, Daylight Saving Time is celebrating its 100th birthday this year.

- Originally meant for wartime, DST ended in 1918 but many regions continued to follow the practice. In 1966, it was officially put back in place when the Uniform Time Act became law. 

- In 2007, the Department of Transportation expanded DST to encompass 65% of the year.

- The DOT regulates DST, though states have the final say on whether they participate. 

- Hawaii and most of Arizona do not participate in DST. Neither do American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands. 

- Last year, 26 states considered making DST permanent year-round, and Florida could become the first state to choose to stay on DST year-round under a proposal currently in its Legislature called the "Sunshine Protection Act of 2018." 

- In Europe, DST is know as "Summer Time" and runs for about three weeks less than the duration of DST in the United States.

- Although many people call it daylight savings time, the official name is daylight saving time. No 's' on 'saving.'
