We hope this newsletter finds you well in your pursuit of impactful research. Today, we would like to shed light on an essential aspect of scholarly publishing: the Data Availability Statement. In this edition, we will explore what a Data Availability Statement is and guide how to incorporate it effectively into your manuscripts before submission.
A Data Availability Statement is a concise section in your manuscript that describes the availability and accessibility of the raw data supporting your study's findings. It informs readers about how and where they can access the data and under what conditions. Including a Data Availability Statement promotes transparency, reproducibility, collaboration, and proper citation of your work.
- Comprehensive and Transparent Publication: By providing a Data Availability Statement, you enable readers to understand and validate your research findings comprehensively.
- Collaboration Opportunities: Sharing your research data opens doors for collaboration with other co-authors interested in similar research areas, fostering new discoveries and advancements.
- Increased Citations: When your data is cited in a repository that provides a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), you gain proper attribution and citation, increasing your visibility and impact within the research community.
- Reproducibility: Transparently sharing research data enhances the reproducibility of your study, allowing others to verify and validate your findings.
- Wider Application of Research: By making your data accessible, you contribute to a broader application of your research, potentially leading to new insights and discoveries.
- Encouraging New Findings: Sharing your data encourages other researchers to explore and build upon your work, facilitating the generation of new findings and knowledge.
- Identify the Raw Data: Clearly state the raw data that supports the findings of your research.
- Specify Access Points: Indicate where the research data can be found and accessed. There are three primary ways to share your data: a. Data Repositories:Preferred method. Find a suitable repository that is accessible, discoverable, and searchable. Ensure it provides clear licensing, Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs), and long-term data preservation. b. Supplementary Files: Submit the raw data as supplementary files with your manuscript. Note that public repositories have more value than supplementary files. c. Data Available upon Request: Provide contact details of the person or committee responsible for granting access to the research data, especially when using third-party data or if legal, ethical, or other concerns restrict public availability. Explain the restrictions clearly.
- Formatting the Statement: Typically, the Data Availability Statement is placed at the end of the research before the Acknowledgement section. Tailor the statement to your specific research and manuscript. Here are some templates to guide you:"The data supporting the findings of this study are openly available in [repository name] at [URL], reference number [reference number].""The data supporting the findings of this study are available within the article.""The data supporting the findings of this study are available within the supplementary materials.""The data supporting the findings of this study are available on request from the corresponding author.""Data sharing is not applicable to this article as no new data were created or analyzed in this study."
Remember, proper citation of data sets is crucial. Hosting your data in a repository with a DOI simplifies the citation process.
Incorporating a Data Availability Statement in your research manuscript enhances its impact, transparency, and reproducibility. We encourage you to embrace this practice and contribute to the advancement of scholarly research.
