Veterinary Engineering - 3D printed Surgical Models, Drill / Saw Guides and Polymeric / Titanium Implants
In the intricate field of veterinary orthopedics, understanding the anatomical structure and safety zones in animals is paramount. The Colored Bone Maps, our 3D printed models, are instrumental in simplifying this complex process.
While two-dimensional data from X-rays, scientific articles, or textbooks have traditionally been utilized to visualize anatomy, there's a significant cognitive leap from 2D representations to the 3D reality of a surgical procedure. Our Colored Bone Maps offer a tangible, user-friendly model, bridging this gap and making anatomical comprehension more accessible.
Based on CT scans of healthy dogs and cats, these models were developed using medical segmentation software. They were subsequently colored to represent safety zones, creating a visual guide that serves as an invaluable resource in both the learning process and surgical planning.
These safety zones were not arbitrarily chosen. Our models are grounded in a strong body of veterinary knowledge. Specifically, the coloring of the dog long bones was devised based on the seminal work of J.M. Marti and A. Miller. Their articles, "Delimitation of safe corridors for the insertion of external fixator pins in the dog 1: Hindlimb" and "...2: Forelimb," published in the Journal of Small Animal Practice, provided critical insights for our models. The color-coded regions on cat long bones and both dog and cat pelvises were developed leveraging P. Tr?bacz's extensive clinical experience and insights from "Improve International Manual of Small Animal Surgery Volume 2."
