Crafting a robust and agile planning strategy is vital to success in product management. As a Product Manager, I constantly search for practical tools and techniques to enhance the product planning strategy. I recently tried to utilize the NOISE analysis as an alternative to SWOT, and I found it beneficial.
Our team hasn't completed product planning yet, but it gave me such a useful understanding of the strategy and direction that I wanted to share this experience sooner. I promise to share the results and the effect after the process is finished.
The Pillars of The NOISE Analysis
NOISE, which stands for Needs, Opportunities, Improvements, Strengths, and Exceptions, is a modern take on the classical SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats). It introduces two crucial elements, "Improvements" and "Exceptions.” I believe these additions bring invaluable advantages in product planning strategy refinement.
The NOISE analysis template is a matrix, much like a SWOT analysis. The matrix includes four quadrants: Needs, Opportunities, Improvements, and Strengths, and it distinguishes itself by introducing a fifth element - the "exception" - right in the heart of the matrix.
In the following, I will try to explain each part with a view to using this model in product development planning and the experience of utilizing this model for our product as a kind of TMS.
Needs: This quadrant addresses what our business or customers require but the product currently fails to achieve. These needs may contain processes and resources and can extend to individual or team requirements or external customers.
Opportunities: Same as SWOT, here, the focus shifts to external opportunities the product can harness to bolster its success. These opportunities are often beyond the product development team or the company's control but can be leveraged by playing to the product’s strengths.
Improvements: The improvements quadrant addresses the necessary internal or external changes to align with the needs. To cheat, you must ensure you have at least one solution to meet every need.
Strengths: This quadrant centers on the internal assets and capabilities the product or even the product development team already has and can control. Capitalizing on these strengths empowers the team to effectively achieve its goals and drive progress.
Exception: The exception component is distinctive, as it delves into what is already transpiring within the other four quadrants, regardless of scale. This unique focus enables product managers to identify what's working well and what's not, facilitating informed decision-making and practical strategy refinement.
Practical Usage

1- Decide a Shared Goal
The first step of a NOISE analysis is to decide on a goal the product wants to achieve. If you have already defined this goal, you can use that.
2- Fill the Noise Analysis Matrix
I strongly suggest doing this in team collaboration or brainstorming sessions. Don't try to finish it in one session because this part is the heart of this process, and we are not going just to jot down the words together. Instead, we want to achieve a shared image and understanding to continue the path.
3- Define Product Strategic Planning
After establishing this shared understanding, we must comprehend what we want to do to reach the product's goal. As a suggestion, consider answering questions such as:
How can we use our strengths to take advantage of opportunities?
What prevents us from taking advantage of these opportunities, and how can we close the gap?
How can we increase our understanding of these opportunities and improve their chances of success?
Which improvements can be implemented quickly, which ones require expert support and advice, and which ones will generate good results while playing to our strengths?
Benefits of Usage NOISE Analysis in Product Planning Strategy Refinement:
To sum it up, NOISE analysis presents a constructive and solution-oriented method for product planning strategy. In our team, It promoted teamwork, encouraged the improvement of existing strengths, and provided a structured framework for tackling the complexity of the task at hand.
By utilizing NOISE analysis, product managers can develop a strategic roadmap that identifies challenges, emphasizes opportunities, and highlights solutions in the pursuit of continuous improvement and success.
