Enhancing Organizational Resilience: The Crucial Role of Operational Effectiveness

Having the ability to respond swiftly and effectively to unforeseen incidents is vital in today’s business environment. On this basis, existing operational effectiveness is key to maintaining business continuity during disruptions. So how well would you rate your organisation’s operations?? Is there a Business Continuity Plan – because this is the ‘Roadmap’ for a crisis.

Let’s take Cyber Security as an example. This is in the Top 5 Concerns for C-suite.

According to Minter Ellison’s Survey, 72 % of executive respondents rated cybers-security within their top 5 concerns; in the same survey, 54% reported not having confidence in their security systems.

Reliance on technology is opening doors for disruptive elements, so thought must be given to emergencies.? Imagine trying to respond to a cyber-attack without a well-developed continuity response plan.

However, planning alone isn’t enough. Employee preparedness is critical. Regular training equips your workforce with the preventive knowledge and skills needed to see inconsistencies and warning signs where conditions can be red-flagged.? Identifying them can pave the way for establishing training in their response roles, in the event of a breach. ?

Effective and robust communication channels are fundamental in any crisis management situation as they allow critical information flow, reduce confusion and facilitate coordinated responses. Clear and timely communication maintains stakeholder confidence and aligns everyone on recovery efforts.

Resource availability is also crucial. Organisations with high staff turnover are vulnerable in their capacity to respond to a crisis, as often key personnel with the necessary skills are among those who resigned, costing the company significantly. ?Staff Retention is also among the top 5 concerns for C-Suite executives.

Without the necessary resources and experience, even the best plans can falter.

This leads us to a Back-to-Basics requirement of getting your house in order because losing knowledgeable and experienced personnel is expensive.

At the base level of every successful organisation, there are 3 fundamental requirements:

1.???? Effective Communication

2.???? Collaboration

3.???? Data-Driven Decision Making

The extent to which each has evolved and allowed to integrate determines their effectiveness.

For this to happen there needs to be a conduit for ensuring employees have what they need to perform their duties without unwarranted hindrance. Otherwise, dissatisfaction and all that goes with that creeps in. This also applies to managers.

However, the information and data that is channelled through the chain of command has to be quantitative, relevant, current, succinct and easy to interpret. ?Everyone is “In the same boat” so bringing awareness of the extent of situations and circumstances is in the best interests of the company. ?

This is where management requires the courage to acknowledge and deliver the reality of what is happening in the organisation and not ignore, downplay or communicate diluted information in some form. ?A hard look at what I call the “Corporate Culture” is required because every manager requires the resources and the tools to perform their duties to the best of their abilities and that is part of their manager’s responsibilities. The infamous, “Well manage it” response and sending them back to the front line, is not the best response in resolving something quickly. ?

Developing multiple conduits that span the business areas that influence the capacity of a person to simply do their job, is essential.? This allows management at all levels, to understand more about the motivational aspects of staff so they become actively part of the solution by improving the working environment, so dissatisfaction is reduced.

We are of course including Management dissatisfaction here, which has increased significantly of late. ?

Why would a manager or an employee leave or become disengaged if work cultures and conditions are pretty good?

Enhancing operational effectiveness across the 3 key requirements mentioned improves your organization’s preparedness for business continuity. By focusing on communication, collaboration and relevant data you lay solid foundations to build resilience across the organisation.

Bringing information to where it is needed, is precisely why the CPA (Company Pulse Analysis) was developed.

Let us show you how the CPA can improve your company across these key areas.
