Executive coaching plays a crucial role in the professional development of leaders, helping them navigate complex challenges and reach their full potential. Incorporating the research findings on reframing problems and leveraging appropriate tools can significantly enhance the effectiveness of executive coaching interventions. In this post, we will explore how executive coaches can apply the research and leverage technology tools to support their clients in reframing problems and unlocking their creative problem-solving abilities.
"Reframing is the secret weapon that empowers leaders to navigate complexity, adapt to change, and create a future of endless possibilities." - Thomas Wedell-Wedellsborg
Begin by introducing the concept of reframing to your coaching clients. Explain how our natural tendency to narrow our perspective limits our problem-solving abilities. According to Thomas Wedell-Wedellsborg, Paddy Miller, and Anders ?rskov, authors of the study "Reframing Problems Improves Creative Problem Solving," reframing involves consciously challenging initial problem framing and considering alternative perspectives (Wedell-Wedellsborg et al., 2017). Highlight the benefits of reframing, such as increased flexibility in thinking, improved innovation, and enhanced decision-making.
2. Create Awareness and Mindset Shift.
Help your clients develop an awareness of their current problem-framing biases. Encourage them to question their assumptions and consider alternative perspectives. Challenge them to think beyond their initial framing and explore different angles of the problem. Foster a growth mindset that embraces curiosity and a willingness to challenge established thinking patterns.
3. Teach Reframing Techniques.
I'd like you to introduce various reframing techniques that can be applied during coaching sessions. These may include:
a. Reverse Assumptions: Encourage clients to question and reverse their underlying assumptions about the problem. This exercise helps unveil new insights and perspectives.
b. Multifocal Thinking: Guide clients to examine the problem from multiple angles and consider the viewpoints of different stakeholders. This technique broadens their understanding and fosters empathy.
c. Metaphorical Thinking: Encourage clients to use metaphors or analogies to reframe the problem. This creative approach allows for fresh insights and alternative interpretations.
d. Perspective Shifting: Help clients step into the shoes of others involved in the situation and view the problem from their perspectives. This exercise promotes empathy and opens up new possibilities.
4. Utilize Technology Tools.

Introduce clients to technology tools that facilitate reframing and creative problem-solving. One powerful tool is mind mapping software . Show them how to use these tools to visually organize their thoughts, explore different problem framings, and generate alternative solutions. According to research conducted by Nilsson and L?vbrand (2018), mind mapping enhances creative thinking and problem-solving capabilities by promoting non-linear and associative thinking processes.
5. Practice and Application.
During coaching sessions, provide opportunities for clients to practice reframing techniques using the tools introduced. Engage in collaborative mind mapping exercises, where both coach and client contribute to exploring different problem perspectives and potential solutions. Encourage clients to integrate reframing into their daily problem-solving routines inside and outside coaching sessions.
6. Reflect and Evaluate.
Regularly reflect with clients on their progress in reframing problems. Discuss the impact of reframing techniques on their creative problem-solving abilities and overall effectiveness. Encourage them to share success stories and challenges faced while applying reframing strategies. Use this feedback to fine-tune coaching interventions and tailor future sessions to their specific needs.
By incorporating the research on reframing problems and leveraging technology tools like mind mapping software, executive coaches can empower their clients to unlock their creative problem-solving potential. Through awareness, mindset shifts, and the application of reframing techniques, executives can develop a broader perspective, enhance innovation, and make more effective decisions. Embracing these approaches in executive coaching journeys can lead to transformative outcomes, enabling leaders to thrive in an increasingly complex and rapidly changing business landscape.

1 年Great stuff, Vanya! While I love to help clients reframe their situations with technological tools (MURAL for the win!), for me, nothing beats a bag of LEGO bricks and some Serious Play where I support my clients to construct old ways of thinking and then literally (and figuratively) break them apart in order to build them anew, resourcefully and sustainably. Are you joining me and my LEGO bricks at the ICF Orange County chapter meeting on June 15th? Hope so. :)
