Enhancing Education Accessibility: UGC Allows Bi-annual Admissions for Higher Education Institutions
In a significant stride towards flexibility and accessibility in higher education, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced that universities and colleges across India can now admit students twice a year.?
This move aims to streamline admissions and provide greater opportunities for students seeking entry into undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD programs.
“Universities worldwide already follow a bi-annual admission system. If Indian HEIs adopt the bi-annual admission cycle, our HEIs can enhance their international collaborations and student exchanges. As a result, our global competitiveness will improve, and we will align with the global educational standards,” says M Jagadesh Kumar, Chairman of UGC.
About the New Guidelines
The UGC's recent decision marks a departure from the traditional annual admission cycle, allowing institutions to offer admissions in both January/February and July/August. Previously, admissions were confined to the July/August session, but now universities have the autonomy to decide which cycles to implement based on their infrastructure and academic capacity.
Benefits of Bi-annual Admissions for HEIs
This initiative offers higher education institutions (HEIs) the flexibility to expand their student intake and introduce new programs in emerging fields. It empowers universities to optimise resource allocation, such as faculty, labs, and support services, more efficiently. Additionally, bi-annual admissions facilitate improved planning and enhance the operational flow within institutions.
Digiicampus | Empowering Access to Education at Higher Education Institutions
Digiicampus offers robust administrative features and enables higher education institutions to manage multiple intake options seamlessly. Institutions can efficiently map students to respective programs or batch years, ensuring smooth operations across different admission periods. This streamlined process enhances administrative efficiency, improves student experience, and supports academic continuity throughout the year.
Conclusion
With the introduction of multi intakes, institutions can now cater to a wider spectrum of students, including those who missed the initial admission cycle due to various reasons. This policy not only aligns Indian educational practices with global standards but also supports the objectives of the National Education Policy 2020 by enhancing the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) and positioning India as a global study destination.
