Enhancing diversity in neuroscience through specialized training programs

The NIH Blueprint for Neuroscience Research is deeply committed to and focused on creating a diverse and inclusive neuroscience workforce at all career stages. In our #NIHBlueprint20 series, we previously highlighted the Enhancing Neuroscience Diversity through Undergraduate Research Education (ENDURE) training program, focused on preparing undergraduate students from underrepresented backgrounds for neuroscience graduate programs.?

In 2017, NIH Blueprint expanded these efforts and established the Diversity Specialized Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Advancement in Neuroscience (D-SPAN) Award. This award supports a defined pathway across career stages for outstanding graduate students who are from diverse backgrounds, including those that are underrepresented in neuroscience research.?

This two-phase award facilitates the completion of the doctoral dissertation and transition of talented graduate students to strong neuroscience research postdoctoral positions and provides career development opportunities relevant to their long-term career goal of becoming independent neuroscience researchers.?

In 2023, the?Brain Research Through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies?, or The BRAIN Initiative?, a partnership between federal and non-federal organizations, spanning 10 Institutes and Centers (ICs) at NIH, with a common goal of accelerating the development of innovative neurotechnologies, joined NIH Blueprint in supporting the D-SPAN program. Since 2017, 211 scholars in 14 cohorts have been supported by this impactful program. In addition, 113 have transitioned to K00 and 15 have secured faculty positions!?
