Unfortunately, digital spaces have mirrored the limitations and biases of the physical world. BIPOC creators often encounter barriers in sourcing digital assets that truly resonate with their identity and culture. From stock photos to design elements, we're often faced with a twofold challenge: finding what's available and ensuring it truly represents us. This gap doesn't just affect the diversity of content we need to tell our authentic stories; it also impacts the inclusivity that's so vital to our digital society.

The Power of Ai in Image Generation

In the world of Ai—where datasets (or algorithms) strive to capture the essence of humanity - it doesn't achieve the 'variety of life' we seek. BUT the more you create using tools like MidJourney, DALL-E, and the emerging Imagine with AI at Meta - the more these assets inclusive representation in our digital searches and selections.

MidJourney and DALL-E: Both these tools use complex machine learning models to generate images from textual descriptions, offering creators an unprecedented canvas to depict diverse identities. My preference is M.J. because of how complex or simple of prompts you can use with immediate results vs having to refine the same prompt multiple times and still not yield ideal results (my experience with DALL-E).

Imagine with Meta Ai

Launched in recent months and direct competitor to DALL-E, Imagine is accessed through Meta's Ai platform. Here's how to start:

1. Go to https://imagine.meta.com/
2. Sign up or log in with your Meta credentials.
3. Begin with simple prompts to familiarize yourself with the tool's capabilities.
4. Experiment with more detailed descriptions to capture specific cultural features.

In our examples, you'll see how we leveraged these Ai tools to generate visuals that celebrate diversity, from the locs of natural hair to the rich hues of cultural attire.

Alt text might be an afterthought for many, and not just for everyday users — even Website, UX, and UI Designers might overlook its significance. Yet, alt text is the unsung hero of web accessibility, offering a textual alternative to visuals for those using screen readers. Beyond accessibility, alt text holds a lesser-known power: it's a valuable opportunity to weave diversity into the very fabric of the web's metadata.

Best Practices:

• Be descriptive and specific, including skin tone, cultural attire, and setting.
• Use relevant keywords that resonate with diverse audiences.
• Ensure alt text complements the image contextually and culturally.
