The accuracy and reliability of our data is determined by the kinematic systems inbuilt in remotely piloted aircraft systems or drones. In this article, we explore the importance of post-processing (PPK) and real-time kinetic (RTK) systems and ground control points in accurately georeferencing collected data.
RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) and PPK (Post-Processing Kinematic) are techniques used to improve the accuracy of GPS (Global Positioning System) measurements. Both methods can provide centimetre-level positioning accuracy, but they differ in their operational characteristics and requirements.
RTK is a real-time positioning technique that utilises a base station and a rover receiver. The base station receives signals from GPS satellites and calculates its precise position. It then transmits correction data to the rover receiver, which applies these corrections to its own measurements in real time, resulting in improved accuracy. RTK requires a real-time communication link between the base station and the rover, typically through radio signals or cellular networks.
PPK, on the other hand, is a post-processing technique that improves GPS accuracy after data collection. With PPK, the GPS data is logged by the rover receiver and stored for later processing. The data is then combined with precise positioning information from a base station or a network of reference stations. This post-processing step allows for more accurate calculations and can achieve similar levels of accuracy as RTK.
