The Enhanced Games: A Controversial Vision for the Future of Sports

In recent months, the sports world has been buzzing about a controversial new concept called the Enhanced Games. Spearheaded by Oxford-educated lawyer and entrepreneur Aron D'Souza, this event aims to create a "drugs Olympics" where performance-enhancing substances are not only permitted but actively encouraged.

?

What are the Enhanced Games?

?

The Enhanced Games is a proposed sporting event that would allow athletes to use performance-enhancing drugs without fear of disqualification or punishment. The argument for the games is that it would level the playing field, as many athletes are already using banned substances, and that it would make doping safer by providing a science and medical-backed drug-taking regime.

?

The Dangers and Risks

?

There are significant risks associated with the proposed approach to these games.

?

Health consequences: unregulated use of performance-enhancing drugs can lead to severe health problems, including heart disease, liver damage, and mental health issues.

Pressure to dope: if the Enhanced Games gain traction, it could put immense pressure on athletes to use drugs to remain competitive, even if they are uncomfortable with the risks. We have never seen a sporting spectacle that promises such open use of performance enhancing substances. If we see a dramatic impact on performance, are we likely to see more non-professional athletes trying some of these substances?

Undermining the spirit of sport: many argue that allowing doping goes against the fundamental principles of fair play and sportsmanship, turning athletic competitions into a battle of pharmacology rather than natural talent and dedication.

My Perspective

?

As a Nutritional Therapist, I am deeply concerned about the potential impact of the Enhanced Games on the health and well-being of athletes. While I understand the desire to push the boundaries of human performance, I believe that this should be done through natural means, such as optimising nutrition, intelligent training, and mental preparation.

?

Encouraging the use of performance-enhancing drugs, even in a controlled setting, sets a dangerous precedent and sends the wrong message to aspiring athletes and fans. The long-term consequences of doping are well-documented, and I fear that the Enhanced Games could lead to a generation of athletes willing to sacrifice their health.

?

Moreover, I believe that the spirit of sport is rooted in the celebration of human potential and the pursuit of excellence through dedication and hard work. By allowing doping, the Enhanced Games threaten to undermine these core values and reduce athletic competitions to a battle of the best drug concoction and the deepest pockets.

?

In conclusion, while I appreciate the desire to challenge the status quo and explore new frontiers in sports, I cannot support the concept of the Enhanced Games. As a society, we should be focusing on promoting health, fairness, and the true spirit of healthy competition, rather than encouraging the use of potentially dangerous substances in the name of performance.
