Engineers Week 2025 Spotlight: Keegan Federal

How long have you been an engineer and from where did you graduate? What is your degree?

I graduated from NC State in 2005 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.? So looks like I’ve been an engineer for about 20 years.

What attracted you to the engineering field?

I’ve always been good at math, and enjoy problem solving, so…it was good fit.

What do you enjoy most about what work you do? What are you looking forward to in the future?

Working at MSS has been a breath of fresh air as far as actually working with and caring about the customers. Looking forward to continuing to expand my knowledge of real world installations and equipment operation solutions through working with the many experienced PMs and engineers already at MSS.

What is some advice you would give to someone considering becoming an engineer? What skills or qualities do you think are essential for being a successful engineer?

I actually talk to a decent number of students/prospective engineers because I tutor high school AP math and science courses.?I think my advice, if you can call it that, is to try to recognize that everything is related and the sooner you can grasp that the easier it is learn new concepts and apply old ones when encountering different problems. From what I can tell the biggest attribute needed to be an engineer is persistence in problem solving – especially when you don’t understand something or are seeing something new.?
