Engineers Week 2025 Spotlight: Eddie Scott
How long have you been an engineer and from where did you graduate? What is your degree?
My degree is in Mechanical Engineering. I graduated in May 2024 from UNC Charlotte. I started at MSS as an engineering Co-op in January 2022. I started as an Assistant Project Engineer in June 2024.
What attracted you to the engineering field?
I spent a lot of time messing around with cars and motorcycles in high school and college. I had interests in aviation and wanted to be an airline pilot when I was younger. My parents and teachers lightly pushed me in the direction of engineering, and I went with it. I always had the mind for it (no memory/recall skills, but good with logic/problem solving).
What do you enjoy most about what work you do? What are you looking forward to in the future?
I enjoy the wide range of projects I get to be a part of on our engineering team. It gives me the opportunity to learn about HVAC and construction as a whole, rather than being pigeon-holed into one type of engineering niche. Right now, I am focused on learning as much as I can to be able to do more in the future.
What is some advice you would give to someone considering becoming an engineer? What skills or qualities do you think are essential for being a successful engineer?
I would say it is very important to try out as many different jobs or internships as possible before going to school for engineering. I think the most important quality to have is to be driven. I don’t think you need to be overly intelligent or gifted. Technical knowledge and critical thinking skills can be developed, but not without the drive and motivation to put in the work.
