For Engineers only? Measure Your Personal Growth With the Future Self Fitness Function
Not all fitness is created equal.
Beyond physical fitness, you can train your mental fitness to become a better or entirely different version of your current self: your Future Self.
Fitness for The Jungfrau Marathon
If you sign up to run the Jungfrau Marathon, you know what's waiting for you: 1'950 vertical meters over a 42.195 km long race, navigating challenging terrain with 4'000 other participants.?
The physical fitness required is easier to estimate and train for: the strength to surmount the elevation gain and the endurance to finish 42.2 km.
Equally important in achieving such ambitious goals are the mental grit and fortitude to push through obstacles and unexpected situations.?With the presence of competition, the desire to achieve a goal time, and the pressure to perform, is easy to envision scenarios where the race may not go according to plan.
Some programs optimally prepare you to run the Jungfrau Marathon, and the best ones focus on physical and mental preparation.
The Problem: A Blurry Future Self and no Clarity on How to Get There.
The problem for most of us is that our future is less well-defined than the Jungfrau Marathon. To become who we want to be and achieve our goals, it is typically a lot harder to know what to train for.
This is, where the fitness function comes to play.
Defining your Future Self
If your future self is still blurry, try answering these questions:
Most of us don't have a name for who we want to be. I am a "Jungfrau Marathon Finisher" or a "El Capitan Climber" is easy. But what is it that really defines you?

PS: In the next issue, we will talk about my BHAG (big, hairy, audacious goal) Mountain Adventure this year: a 2 weeks Vol Biv Expedition in the Indian Himalayas. Vol Biv is flying with a paraglider and camping on top of the mountain to continue flying the next day. It is the wildest, most daring but also the most rewarding type of flying there is. Flying in the Himalayas adds an extra, let's say spice to it. The remoteness, the grandness, and the adventure are what we seek.
We will be flying from the Himalayan foothills of Dharamsala, the residence of the Dalai Lama, to reach Komic Village, the highest village in the world at 4'720 m (15'500 ft). Stay tuned!
