For Engineers only? Measure Your Personal Growth With the Future Self Fitness Function

Not all fitness is created equal.

Beyond physical fitness, you can train your mental fitness to become a better or entirely different version of your current self: your Future Self.

Fitness for The Jungfrau Marathon

If you sign up to run the Jungfrau Marathon, you know what's waiting for you: 1'950 vertical meters over a 42.195 km long race, navigating challenging terrain with 4'000 other participants.?

The physical fitness required is easier to estimate and train for: the strength to surmount the elevation gain and the endurance to finish 42.2 km.

Equally important in achieving such ambitious goals are the mental grit and fortitude to push through obstacles and unexpected situations.?With the presence of competition, the desire to achieve a goal time, and the pressure to perform, is easy to envision scenarios where the race may not go according to plan.

Some programs optimally prepare you to run the Jungfrau Marathon, and the best ones focus on physical and mental preparation.

The Problem: A Blurry Future Self and no Clarity on How to Get There.

The problem for most of us is that our future is less well-defined than the Jungfrau Marathon. To become who we want to be and achieve our goals, it is typically a lot harder to know what to train for.

This is, where the fitness function comes to play.

Defining your Future Self

If your future self is still blurry, try answering these questions:

  • What matters, really?
  • What adventures will you live?
  • What accomplishments will you have?
  • Who are you?

Most of us don't have a name for who we want to be. I am a "Jungfrau Marathon Finisher" or a "El Capitan Climber" is easy. But what is it that really defines you?

The Future Self Fitness Function

Only once you become really clear about your Future Self, the person you would really like to be, we can find the Fitness Function that will get us there.

Ready for an experiment? Take out your journal!

  1. Note down your "3 peaks", the three areas of your life that are most important to you. (My 3 peaks are: my Relationship, my Work, and my Mountain Adventures).
  2. Write a paragraph per peak on who you'd love to be. Dream big, be bold! Dream beyond something that you can already achieve with your current level of skills. Grow to your Future Self! Expand your current comfort zone!
  3. Now, define the fitness function for each of your peaks.

This is my Work Fitness Function:

Work Fitness = Ability to Inspire * Ability to Coach * Confidence in my Own and my Client's Abilities

It's straightforward and basic and that is the beauty of it. Once you get down to the core of what really matters, you can start working on your fitness and start your journey to become your future self immediately.

Raise Your Fitness Level!

With the right level of fitness, you can be incredibly successful and have way more fun at work, create a relationship full of memorable experiences, and go on adventures you never dared to dream of before. Leave mediocrity today!

With your fitness functions, you can train specifically what's required. Leading others? Delegating better? Having difficult conversations? Build your confidence? Say "No" more often? Take quality time for yourself and your partner? Be 100% present when together?

Whatever it is, start your journey today and define your fitness function!

PS: In the next issue, we will talk about my BHAG (big, hairy, audacious goal) Mountain Adventure this year: a 2 weeks Vol Biv Expedition in the Indian Himalayas. Vol Biv is flying with a paraglider and camping on top of the mountain to continue flying the next day. It is the wildest, most daring but also the most rewarding type of flying there is. Flying in the Himalayas adds an extra, let's say spice to it. The remoteness, the grandness, and the adventure are what we seek.

We will be flying from the Himalayan foothills of Dharamsala, the residence of the Dalai Lama, to reach Komic Village, the highest village in the world at 4'720 m (15'500 ft). Stay tuned!

Maybe you are at a point right now, where you want to re-assess what is really important to you? Maybe you want to re-define who you want to be, and re-think the level of success that you want to have in your work, life, and relationships? If that is you right now, you are probably open-minded to kickstart the process with a simple no-strings-attached strategy call. In this call, you will gain tons of clarity on your direction and how to get there. If that sounds like a good idea, why not simply send me a message and we will figure out what works best for you?
