Engineer's Day: find out when it is celebrated and what is commemorated

Engineer's Day is celebrated every March 4. It was declared by UNESCO and seeks to raise awareness about the importance of this work for society.

All about Engineer's Day

Engineering is a branch of science whose main objective is the search for the improvement of different processes. It is through the invention, optimization and application of various fields of study that these improvements are materialized. In order to commemorate this noble profession, Engineer's Day has been declared.

When is Engineer's Day commemorated?

It was during the 40th session of the General Conference, held in November 2019, that UNESCO declared the commemoration of World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development on March 4.

The World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) was the organization that proposed the date in memory of its foundation during the celebration of its 50th Anniversary.

The official logo of this commemoration incorporates the colors of the Sustainable Development Goals, paying special attention to the issues of water, energy, innovation and sustainable infrastructure (located in the center of the image).

The reason for establishing this commemoration was to raise awareness of the importance of engineering in everyday life and the way in which it helps curb climate change and intervenes in sustainable development.

On the other hand, there are other messages to which UNESCO places great importance on Engineer's Day:

Seek the inclusion of women in the engineering field, both in the conclusion of studies and in the labor field.

Due to the shortage of professionals, promote a taste for engineering as a career option among young people.

Giving visibility to the importance of engineering in the technological and economic progress of society.

The migration of qualified engineers from underdeveloped countries to developed countries.

Importance of politics in the implementation of engineering for sustainable development.

Engineering is fundamental to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

The activities of engineers are essential for meeting basic needs or reducing poverty.

The role of engineering today

Currently, it is of the utmost importance to implement environmental education from the most basic levels, and engineering is no exception.

The activities of engineers focus on the creation of new processes, technologies and methods that make life easier for people. Its application is found in almost all areas: Internet, robotics, machinery, logistics, computing, mechanics, medicine, etc.

Therefore, the main objective is to carry out all these improvements seeking the least environmental impact.

Sustainable Development Goals

Derived from the role of engineering to create a more sustainable life, it is important to mention that its global efforts should seek to focus on the Sustainable Development Goals proposed by the UN, which have a deadline of 2030.

Among them, the following stand out:

Guarantee access to water and sanitation. Especially in those countries that are at a disadvantage.

Search for clean and affordable energy. Such is the case of wind energy.

Creating more sustainable cities and communities.

Responsible production and consumption.

Climate action.

Engineer's Day was decreed in order to raise awareness of the importance of this science in our daily lives. Being a very extensive field of study, there is a very diverse and interesting range of options to choose from.
