The National Engineer's Day is celebrated on September 15 every year across the country to mark the birth anniversary of M Visvesvaraya. The day is observed to honour the contributions made by Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya in the field of science and technology. In 1968, the Government of India declared Sir M Visvesvaraya's birth anniversary as Engineers' Day. Since then, this day has been marked to recognise and acknowledge all engineers who have contributed and still do so to build a modern and developed India.
M Visvesvaraya was born in 1861 in a Telugu family at Chikkaballapur located at a distance of around 60 km from Bengaluru, Karnataka. After completing his formal school education in his hometown, Sir M Visvesvaraya went to study BA at University of Madras. However, he later switched and pursued a diploma in civil engineering at the College of Science in Pune.
Following a catastrophic flood in 1908 in Hyderabad, the then Nizam requested Sir M Visvesvaraya's services to design a drainage system and protect the city from flooding. The engineer proposed the construction of storage reservoirs and also built a sewage farm outside the city to prevent pollution of the Musi river that flows through Hyderabad.
Sir M Visvesvaraya received the Bharat Ratna in the year 1955 and was also conferred the British knighthood. He served as Diwan of Mysore from1912 to 1918.
