The Engineering Code of Ethics - Why a Timely Reminder is the Need of the Hour

The Engineering Code of Ethics - Why a Timely Reminder is the Need of the Hour

Throughout the annals of human history, engineering has made remarkable progress, marked by brilliant achievements and ground breaking innovations. However, it has also experienced unfortunate instances of catastrophic failures, leaving lasting scars on both society and the engineering profession. From the infamous sinking of the Titanic and the tragic fate of the Hindenburg to the catastrophic nuclear disaster at Chernobyl, and the recent Titan Submersible incident, these failures have had far-reaching consequences.

They have often had a profound effect on engineers and forced the profession to confront the shortcomings in technical and construction practices. They have also led to the development of a formal code of ethics, addressing ethical standards. While the Code has probably been formulated in the USA, it is valid for most engineering community around the world.

Gordon H Hart , Princeton engineering graduate (Class of '70), in his recent article on the Titan submersible incident reminds us of the National Code For Professional Engineers and emphasizes the need to review the same.

Here are the some of the most important reminders for the engineers:

  1. Hold safety, health, and welfare of the public paramount
  2. Perform services only in areas of their competence
  3. Issue objective and truthful public statements
  4. Always act as faithful agents or trustees
  5. Avoid deceptive acts
  6. Always uphold honour, ethics and the law to maintain the dignity of the profession

Despite setbacks, the engineering community’s unwavering determination and commitment to excellence in the landscape has led to transformative achievements. Engineers are the guardians of progress, and with that role comes the responsibility to learn from the past and forge a better future. For us who are engineers, it is first and foremost, about designing and fabricating safer and secure equipment as we move forward.??

Safety has been and will remain a key aspect of engineering practice. Engineers have fueled the progress but unfortunately, they were never been empowered to guide the direction of the 'progress'. Now we all know where the decades of progress have led us into. It is now more than anytime in past required that the engineers at the leadership and decision-making positions should guide the progress towards sustainability. Therefore, as much we may celebrate the progress driven by engineer's zeal, we must remind the engineer of the unfinished job to make the progress a sustainable progress.
