The ocean is hotter than ever, both at the surface and deep below, according to a groundbreaking study co-authored by St. Thomas Professor John Abraham. The study reveals a staggering heat content increase in 2024—equivalent to 140 times the world’s total electricity generation in 2023. With the ocean storing 90% of excess global heat, this warming is driving extreme climate events worldwide, from wildfires and droughts to record-breaking storms and floods.

Learn how this vital research underscores the ocean’s role in shaping our climate future.

Engineering Peace: Dr. Obasesam Okoi Inspires the Next Generation of Tommie Innovators?

From civil engineering in Nigeria to coordinating the peace engineering program at St. Thomas, Dr. Obasesam Okoi’s journey has been one of blending technical expertise with social justice. Now an assistant professor of justice and peace studies, Okoi empowers students to use engineering as a tool for advancing the common good. Through his Fulbright-Hays research in Tanzania, collaborations on renewable energy projects, and leadership in global peacebuilding initiatives, Okoi challenges future engineers to think critically about privilege, power, and community impact. His work at St. Thomas exemplifies how technical training can spark innovation for a brighter, more equitable world.

In a recent episode of WCCO's "Adam and Jordana" podcast, Dr. Ali Ling, assistant professor of civil engineering at St. Thomas, delved into Minnesota's groundbreaking regulations on PFAS, also known as "forever chemicals." Effective Jan. 1, 2025, the state bans intentionally added PFAS in 11 categories of consumer products, with a goal to minimize these harmful substances by 2032. Ling highlighted the dangers of PFAS—persistent pollutants found in everyday items—and applauded Minnesota-based 3M’s commitment to end PFAS production.

Explore how Minnesota is setting the standard for environmental health.
