Engineer by Day. Songwriter by Night. Dad all the time.

Our lives are so multifaceted. At the risk of "ruining our personal brand" we often keep our LinkedIn content business-focused and professional. But, it's just not our true selves. We have so much more to offer the world than just business jargon.

I'm an engineer, a business executive, and I'm good at what I do. I really enjoy leading and coaching engineering teams, contributing to my team, and building up companies. But that's just part of who I am. I'm also a songwriter and I have dreams of how my unique background can influence others through powerful storytelling in music. But that's not all. I'm also a dad. And while I have many aspirations, being a dad is the most challenging and rewarding of them all.

In life we must make many choices, even on a daily basis. Last night I accomplished "nothing". I didn't spend time solving any work problems. I didn't do any songwriting. Instead, I was hiding behind a bush outside in the dark and flashlights were bouncing all over the place searching for me. We had a blast playing "Ghost in the Graveyard" with our children as we searched, found, and chased after each other. And it was time well spent. I accomplished something special for my children: we shared our time together and built memories.

The greatest influence we can have in life is within the walls of our own home, especially on our children.

Being a husband and father is my greatest honor, joy, and blessing.

Our employees and teammates have multifaceted lives too. It's not all about that big project, the perfect employee image, or getting the next big thing done. Yes, let's focus and rally our teams to experience the joy of a job well done, but let's never forget who our employees are. They are employees, team members, husbands, wives, parents, aspiring artists, neighbors, community leaders, etc.

I'm glad to be an engineering/business leader, a songwriter, and first and foremost: a dad.

You make a great point here Matt, I tend to just unfollow things that I don't want to see. I do however enjoy learning more about people's passions. I got a real wake-up call this year when a customer of mine suddenly passed away. I learned a lot about him through his memorial that was streamed via Youtube, which made me regret not being able to get to know him better before he was gone. I say forge on sir.

Great read Matt Duke. It is refreshing that people are starting to bring their "whole self" to the table. And... we love Ghost in the Graveyard at our house too!
