Engaging Your Hidden Potential

Engaging Your Hidden Potential

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have super-intelligence? It’s a familiar theme in science fiction where scientists enhance our brains to spectacular levels of efficiency. But back in the real world, there may be ways to improve our thinking and our creative and analytical faculties. I know. You’re probably thinking about some new miracle pill that super-charge intelligence and ramps up our cognitive functioning. If only that were possible! This suggestion might seem to be skirting around the edges of fantasy but there are sound reasons to support the notion that we really can boost our ability to think more clearly, improve our memory recall and boost our creativity.

When people will not weed their own minds, they are apt to be overrun by nettles.

― Horace Walpole

The human brain represents one of the great frontiers in scientific research and there are still many questions about the nature of human intelligence that require further research and understanding. Some cellular biologists have even suggested that our intelligence is not limited to the locality of our brains but is something that’s expressed throughout the entire human organism. The debate continues and it’s one of many new ideas that are being explored in the field of cerebral research.

Brushing the clouds away from my eyes, I see clarity in the raindrop and beauty in the first ray of morning sun...Life is strange and wondrous...

― Virginia Alison

Perhaps that’s why philosophy and poetry seek to express life’s complexity in the music of allegory and the harmony of verse. But there are practical ways to improve the way our brains function and, fortunately, these methods don’t involve the use of any laboratory equipment, electrodes or drugs!

As you might suspect, diet plays an important role in ensuring that the brain receives an adequate supply of appropriate energy. Our brains are high-octane processors that consume around twenty percent of the calories we consume on a daily basis. If the old adage that we are what we eat holds true, then we need to ensure that we provide our brains with the highest quality fuel. Eating organic, unprocessed food seems to favour our health and wellbeing and reduces strain on the digestive system. It’s been suggested that healthy eating can improve cognitive functioning too. Cutting down on sugar and aiming for a healthy, balanced diet seems to be the best way to respect our bodies’ needs whilst keeping cerebral function at optimum levels of efficiency.

Meditation, practiced individually and as a family, helps with a different type of peace. It is not a calm absence of noise and confusion but a calm that persists in the very center of the noise and the chaos. Ten minutes daily can transform your life.

― Ann Brasco

Let’s think about sleep. Your body needs rest. So does your brain. Making sure you get enough sleep is an essential ingredient in the quest for a brighter, sharper and fully functioning brain. You know how difficult it is to concentrate when you’re tired, don’t you? That’s why rest is so important. It might be glaringly obvious but getting sufficient rest is a cornerstone of preserving cerebral efficiency. There’s a body of interesting research that suggests we should take a thirty-minute nap every afternoon in order to allow the brain to process everything that’s happened since we woke up. The evidence suggests that cognitive efficiency rises by around eighteen percent after this daily retreat for a recuperative nap. The evidence was tested and confirmed by NASA when applied to its test pilots and the idea certainly gets my vote!

Positive thinking will let you do everything better than negative thinking will.

-??????Zig Ziglar

One of the surprising results of recent research is the recognition that we can persuade our brains to function more efficiently through the power of suggestion.

One of the best times to attempt this kind of interaction is just before we go to sleep. By relaxing deeply and giving ourselves clearly stated, positive and unambiguous statements, we can trigger reactions in the subconscious that can be aimed at enhancing various functions of our minds. We could instruct ourselves to remember things more quickly and more easily, for example. We could tell ourselves that we can understand things more easily and retain and recall the information effortlessly. We could tell ourselves that we learn new things easily. The list could cover a vast array of items, each one identified and targeted to produce specific results. How this system works is still a question for debate. The important thing is that the method can be employed to produce a whole range of interesting results from easier learning to more efficient data analysis and processing.

This relationship between the power of positive suggestion and your brain’s ability to respond to the new programme reveals a great deal about the way our minds and bodies are deeply inter-connected. Though the mechanisms are not fully understood and researchers are still exploring new ways to measure and explain these fascinating phenomena, the fact that we can exercise such a remarkable influence over our ability to think marks a revolutionary turning point in the way we relate to our potential.

The mind of man is capable of anything.

—???Joseph Conrad

Let’s make today the perfect moment to take better care of our nutritional needs, to get enough sleep and to start an exciting new training programme for our thinking processes. Be prepared to be surprised at the results you can achieve. Because the human mind is wider, deeper and more powerful than you might’ve suspected!

We are shaped by our thoughts. We become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.
