Supporting a Core Value
Sustainability is a Granite core value. To support this key driver of our business, Granite is hosting a companywide Sustainability Week this week (August 5-9) to engage our teams with our mission to be the leading provider of sustainable infrastructure solutions. First launched in 2022, Granite’s Sustainability Week has grown every year.
Throughout the week, Granite will engage our teams with an educational campaign, toolbox talks, webinars, leadership conversations, a photo contest, a trivia game, and other activities. Teams are also encouraged to plan local Sustainability Week celebrations. We want our people to understand Granite’s role in advancing the goals of sustainable development. When people see clearly how the work they do connects to the bigger picture, and how they are helping to build a more sustainable future, they feel more motivated and engaged to find ways to improve sustainability impacts in their daily work.
The Sustainable Development Goals
The overarching theme for Sustainability Week 2024 is “Granite and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)." The SDGs are the heart of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, providing “a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future.” As a participant in the United Nations Global Compact, Granite has aligned its sustainability strategy to support the SDGs.
Granite has identified ten “core” SDGs, where our business has the most direct impact or can create societal benefits. Last year’s event focused on five of these core SDGs, and this year we are focusing on the remaining five. ?Each day of the week will present an employee educational campaign highlighting one SDG and Granite’s contributions to achieving it:
Daily Themes
We are dedicated to creating an inclusive work culture, which actively includes an infinite range of unique characteristics, experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives. Promoting gender equality and empowering women within our workforce is one aspect of Granite’s core value of Inclusion. Construction careers are great, and everyone deserves equal access to that opportunity. We aim to cultivate a workforce that reflects the diversity of the communities where we work and foster a culture of inclusive diversity where everyone feels fully engaged in an accepting environment.?

Granite is dedicated to advancing SDG 6 by providing services related to water infrastructure and managing water use responsibly in our own operations. Granite’s sustainability strategic vision is to become a leader in providing sustainable infrastructure solutions, and water infrastructure services are a key part of supporting a sustainable society. Water is life, and wherever you find people, you find infrastructure to manipulate and control water. From dams, fish passages, and flood control to ports, canals, and injection wells, we play a vital role in providing this most essential infrastructure to society. Layne provides services related to water infrastructure, expertly managing water throughout the full life cycle (supply, treatment, delivery, and maintenance), and delivering potable water to communities.

Granite is dedicated to advancing SDG 7 by promoting clean energy generation in our industrial and energy market segments and minimizing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in our own operations. Granite’s sustainability strategic vision is to become a leader in providing sustainable infrastructure solutions, including solar and other renewable energy and energy storage markets.
“Operation Decarb” (short for “decarbonization” or removing carbon emissions) is our initiative to reduce carbon and other GHG emissions. Our decarbonization efforts focus on Granite’s largest sources of emissions: our materials facilities and equipment fleet.

Granite aligns with SDG 8 by prioritizing our people, ethical business practices, inclusion, and safety. Our greatest asset is the partnership we have with our employees, so we prioritize maintaining compensation and benefits programs that attract and retain top talent. Through protecting human rights, promoting ethical and inclusive conduct, and targeting improvements in safety performance, we foster a professional work environment that supports full and productive employment and decent work for all.
At Granite, our mission is to provide infrastructure solutions that support more prosperous and resilient communities—this gets to the heart of SDG 9. The infrastructure we build helps satisfy society's need for mobility, power, water, and essential services that sustain living conditions and improve quality of life. We also advocate for sustainable infrastructure investment and more sustainable practices through our government affairs activities and participation in industry associations.
Contributing to SDG 9 is not just about?what?we build—it’s also about?how?we build. Through our sustainability efforts, we work to continuously improve how we manage social and environmental impacts.
