Engaged employees tend to feel less lonely; however, 25% of Fully Remote workers still report experiencing loneliness!
Employee Engagement and loneliness - Gallup - June 2024

Engaged employees tend to feel less lonely; however, 25% of Fully Remote workers still report experiencing loneliness!

?? 20% of employees worldwide experience loneliness on a daily basis.

?? Engaged employees were 64% less likely to be lonely than those who are not engaged and employees who say they have a best friend at work are 21% less likely to be lonely.

?? Loneliness is more prevalent among employees younger than age 35 than it is for those aged 35 and older.

The risk of mortality among people who lacked community and social ties was two times greater than that of people who had many social contacts, according to a new interesting research published by Gallup using data ?? from a survey of 19,846 employees working in US companies and members of the Gallup Panel conducted between Feb 6-16, 2024.

?What is the definition of loneliness?

Overall Loneliness by age and WFH employees

Researchers defined loneliness as social isolation of employees and they found that chronic loneliness have devastating effects on physical and mental health.

?Factors Negatively Impacting Employee Experience

Loneliness is the last factor impacting EX

Researchers have discovered that loneliness significantly affects employee engagement as a component of well-being. The additional factors include:

? Stress

? Anger

? Worry

? Sadness

?? The risk of mortality among people who lacked community and social ties was two times greater than that of people who had many social contacts. These variations were unrelated to physical health, economic status, and health behaviors.

?? Researchers observed that employed adults report lower levels of loneliness, at 20%, in contrast to the unemployed, who report a higher rate of 32%. This pattern is consistent among various age demographics.

?? Work interactions don't necessarily need to be in person to provide a benefit. Another research found that all forms of social time (phone, video, texting, etc.) are associated with a better mood - according to Jim Clifton and Jim Harter

?? Technological interactions such as messaging have thresholds — moods drop after moderate amounts.

?Engagement in work activities reduces Loneliness

Disengaged employees are also those with high level of loneliness

Researchers have found that employees who feel their opinions are valued are 39% less likely to experience loneliness, and those who have the opportunity to do what they excel at every day are 37% less likely to report feelings of loneliness.

?? Finally researchers conclude that employers should provide appropriate benefits and flexibility to enhance employee well-being, without neglecting their profound impact on employees' life satisfaction.

?? ???? ???????????????? ????????:

This wonderful research has demonstrated that loneliness should be taken as seriously by managers and organizations as other factors that detrimentally impact the employee experience, such as stress, anger, worry, or sadness, beginning with onboarding.

The findings of this research indicate that work diminishes the experience of loneliness. While not all mental health concerns stem from work, it is a significant factor in life satisfaction and daily emotional states.

Thank you ?? Gallup researchers team for these insightful findings: Jon Clifton Jim Krieger

I think during the pandemic we intentionally focused on making remote effective and somehow we have forgotten to bring some of those lessons we learnt. The loneliness situation is very worrying. Consider; - Onboarding; Ensure new starters have a buddy to enable them to find their way, intentionally set up networking opportunities and "watercooler moments". Enable people to find the BFF at work. -Plan time to connect in virtual meetings without jumping straight into business. Virtual team building events, mixed with IRL. -We humans need those regular connection points, so don't skip meeting up in person for the always being. online, mix it up. Some of my client are having summer retreats which provides a connection boost and a lot of fun! Jeffrey Hall, Prof.Communication Studies, University of Kansas found that meaningful interactions — like laughter-filled hangouts or emotional discussions — adequately keep loneliness at bay. Happy Friday.

Valuable insights! With the increasing adoption of remote and hybrid work models, employees may face varying levels of isolation based on their workplace arrangement. While digital interactions can alleviate some feelings of loneliness, there is a need to explore the optimal balance between virtual and in-person engagements for deeper insights. For example, understanding how different communication methods such as video calls, instant messaging, and face-to-face meetings impact feelings of connection and loneliness can aid organizations in crafting effective remote work strategies. When onboarding is conducted remotely, HR can advise managers to facilitate virtual coffee breaks, team-building activities, or informal chats to foster social connections among team members. These informal interactions replicate the office environment and contribute to building camaraderie. Alternatively, in a hybrid work model, casual gatherings with managers and teammates can simulate the social dynamics typically found in an office setting. Thank you sharing this thought provoking research.

Nicolas BEHBAHANI Great research. We have said that mental health includes depression from the past; anxiety for the future; and loneliness in the present. The loneliness epidemic is real and this research confirms it. There is quite a bit of research on social isolation and mortality: Naito R, McKee M, Leong D, Bangdiwala S, Rangarajan S, Islam S, Yusuf S. Social isolation as a risk factor for all-cause mortality: Systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies. PLoS One. 2023 Jan 12;18(1):e0280308. doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0280308. PMID: 36634152; PMCID: PMC9836313. Helping employees feel less lonely is one of the challenges of managers and peers. Thanks for sharing.

Nicolas BEHBAHANI shocking numbers and very valuable Gallup study. These outcomes represent what we see in society as well, Gen Z experience a high level of loneliness. The key question is if we try combatting loneliness or that we mobilize Gen Z to believe in themselves, feel valued and belong. I often bring in Maxwell Maltz theory in. Strengthen the inner "Success" type: (S) sense of direction - help youngsters unlock a nostalgia for the future. (U) understand how things are - help them to see things as they are. (C) courage - learn to have faith and take action. (C) charity - initiate moments to take care of each other. (E) esteem - build self esteem with coaching (S) self -confidence - share moments of success and recall them. (S) self acceptance - shape conditions to express the actual self.
