Engage Your Audience’s Senses

Hi,

Isn’t it amazing how our senses are connected to our memories and emotions?

Like how the smell of freshly-baked cookies can take you back to your childhood...

Or how the sight of a lit-up Christmas tree can bring you back to a holiday you spent in New York five years ago…

And how having the wind run through your hair while driving can make you feel nostalgic about your first love…

Our senses—they’re amazing!

Which is exactly why I want you to engage them whenever you’re doing a presentation.?

If you want to make your audience imagine being on the beach…

…Talk about the sound of waves crashing to the shore.

…The feeling of having warm sand under their feet.?

…The sight of towering coconut trees lined up against a clear blue sky.?

This is the exact advice I gave one of our members in last week’s Rehearsal Room.

And it’s because he was trying to pull his audiences in to the feeling of having a new car.?

So, I told him to engage all the senses to evoke a certain response from the crowd.?

I told him to talk about that very specific new car smell that all of us love…

The sight of a dashboard lighting up like the Christmas lights…

And the feeling of rolling the windows down to enjoy some afternoon breeze while driving.?

These things work really well because they transport your audience to a different time and place.

A time and place where they’re not sitting in a room with a hundred other people...

Or sharing a virtual Zoom meeting with them.

If you can take them to that other dimension…

Then you can have better, one-on-one conversations with every single person in your audience.?

So, don’t forget to engage your audience’s senses whenever possible.?
