Engage In Healthy Conflict

Engage In Healthy Conflict

Conflict is naturally uncomfortable, but productive conflict focused on concepts and ideas is essential for any great team to grow.

When teams have a foundation of vulnerability-based trust, conflict simply becomes an attempt to find the best possible solution in the shortest period of time.

Patrick Lencioni, the best-selling author of “The Five Dysfunctions of a team” shares a 2-minute video talking about the importance of engaging in healthy conflict to create an environment of healthy discussion and decision making.

I spent the day with Ambition, in Hong Kong with their leadership team where we tackled the second behaviour on “The Five Behaviours of a Cohesive Team? Model” – Conflict.

The biggest take away from the group was that everybody handles conflict differently. The DiSC Conflict Map displays the distribution of team members across various DiSC styles, the associated healthy and unhealthy behaviours during conflict. By analysing their own DiSC styles and identifying the different approaches in dealing with conflict, the team managed to produce some creative and dynamic action plans to further develop their Conflict skills.

Learning about one another's differences greatly helped the team realise that conflict, is in fact less threatening now that they are able to anticipate reactions, which come less as a surprise.

Best of luck in putting those goals into action and I’ll see you in June again to kick off the third behaviour – “Commitment”, where we will focus on Clarity around decisions, not consensus.
