Engage at Every Age!
May marks Older Americans Month, and we particularly like this year’s theme of “Engage at Every Age”! Engaging with others is essential for healthy aging; isolation takes a physical and mental toll. Having a purpose keeps life interesting! You can engage with others even if you have physical limitations. Consider these activities, or come up with your own:
Rekindle or nurture a relationship. Call a friend or relative to reconnect. Bring cookies to a neighbor or your local fire station. Making someone else’s day will also make your own.
Write a letter to our troops. Our dedicated service men and women would appreciate your kind note. Organizations such as Operation Gratitude offer some guidelines.
Send cards to nursing home residents. Contact a local nursing home and ask how to get cards to those who would appreciate them. You can write cards even if you’re homebound; this activity would give your day a boost.
Pursue a new hobby or interest. My 93-year-old client recently started to care for bonsai plants. He enjoys watching them grow, and he discusses them with friends. He is also learning how to use a slow cooker. These small activities bring great rewards.
Use your knitting or crocheting skills to help those in need. Make blankets for sick and underprivileged children through Project Linus. In Northern Delaware, contact Fran P. at (302) 328-0429 for information.
Volunteer. If you’re physically able, lend your time to a local community organization.
As an older adult, you can contribute your time, skills, and wisdom. Doing so helps others—and bolsters your own well-being. Engage at Every Age!
