Energy theft is a persistent issue in many African countries, significantly impacting their economies and energy sectors. Here's an overview of the situation in major economies:
Nigeria
Energy theft is estimated to cost the Nigerian power sector over $600 million annually. Distribution companies (DISCOs) lose substantial revenue due to illegal connections, bypassed meters, and unpaid bills. About 48% of generated power is not billed, highlighting the scale of the problem.
South Africa
South Africa faces similar challenges, with Eskom, the national utility, estimating annual losses of around 20 billion ZAR (over $1 billion). Illegal connections and non-payment are significant contributors, particularly in informal settlements and industrial areas.
Kenya
Kenya Power, the primary utility company, loses an estimated $100 million annually due to energy theft. Illegal connections, tampered meters, and fraud are prevalent, undermining the utility's financial stability and its ability to expand services
Ghana
Ghana also struggles with energy theft, costing the Electricity Company of Ghana approximately $200 million annually. Strategies such as customer audits and the deployment of prepaid meters are in place to address the issue.

Using the statistics gathered, I will prepare visual graphs to showcase the comparative economic impacts of energy theft across these countries. Stay tuned while I generate these visuals.
The bar chart above highlights the estimated annual losses due to energy theft in major African economies:
These losses underscore the urgent need for targeted interventions and robust anti-theft strategies across the continent. Let me know if you'd like to explore specific measures or strategies further. The chart image is available for download here.
