Energy to support 1 billion Google users per month = driving 1 million cars for 1000 miles
Energy used for 1 Google search = 60 watt light bulb on 17 seconds
Kate Brandt, lead for Google sustainability, said Google is able to get the same amount of energy to serve an active Google user for one month the equivalent of driving a car for one mile.
Google products provide over 100 billion searches every month, map information for over 1 billion monthly users. So for Google to serve its 1 billion monthly users, is like to consume the same amount of energy for 1 Million vehicles to drive a 1000 miles per month. https://tinyurl.com/jxmrp8w
The growth for Data Center’s energy consumption cannot be ignored, as we are marching toward a digital future.

9 年Of course this has to be compared to the energy cost of how it used to be done. Printing and distributing phone books springs to mind, which use far exceeds all the search energy Google uses. (And in fact 95% of the energy from a search on a mobile device is the cellular network, itself, not the data center.) In general, ICT (Information & Communications Technology) uses 2% of the world's energy to make the other 98% so much more efficient. As the Smart202 Report states: ICT saves 5 times its carbon footprint in rest of the economy. Finally, so that we keep the data center energy use in perspective: just recharging all the cell phones in the whole world, uses more energy each day than all the servers in all the data centers.
