U.S. will collapse Iran’s economy by shutting down its oil industry, Treasury secretary says
President Donald Trump’s sanctions against Iran are designed to shut down the country’s oil industry and “collapse its already buckling economy,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Thursday.
The U.S. is deploying sanctions against Iran aggressively for “immediate maximum impact,” Bessent told the Economic Club of New York. Trump’s goal is to slash Iran’s oil exports of 1.5 million barrels per day to a trickle, the Treasury secretary said.
“We are going to shut down Iran’s oil sector and drone manufacturing capabilities,” Bessent said. The administration also intends to cut off Tehran’s access to the international financial system, he said.
Prices for U.S. crude oil and the global benchmark Brent turned positive after Bessent’s comments. West Texas Intermediate rose 5 cents to close at $66.37 per barrel by while Brent gained 16 cents to settle at $69.46.
“Making Iran broke again will mark the beginning of our updated sanctions policy,” the Treasury secretary, a former global investment manager, said. “If I were an Iranian, I would get all my money out of the rial now,” he said, referring to Iran’s currency.

UK plans to overhaul windfall oil and gas tax
Britain plans to overhaul its windfall tax regime on oil and gas producers once current levies run out in 2030, it said on Wednesday as it vowed to transform the North Sea into a renewables hub.
The government is asking industry players and others to provide feedback until May 28 on policy options including taxing what it calls "excess revenue". It did not announce specific price thresholds in this consultation.
Any new regime would likely apply to the price producers receive after the use of financial products commonly employed to shield them from price fluctuations, according to the consultation document.
In October, Britain's Labour government upped its windfall tax on oil and gas producers to 38% from 35% and extended the levy by a year to March 2030, bringing the headline tax rate on the sector to 78%, among the highest in the world.
A 25% windfall tax was first introduced by the previous Conservative government in May 2022 in the wake of soaring energy prices following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The tax was subsequently increased to 35% in November 2022, and extended by one year in March 2024.

Work to start at new Scottish wind farm as contractors hired
Work is expected to start at a major new renewables site in Scotland within weeks.
Progress on the new Scottish onshore wind farm is moving forward after leading renewable energy developer OnPath Energy hired three key contractors.
OnPath has been working towards construction on the Mill Rig Wind Farm, which straddles the South Lanarkshire and East Ayrshire border near Darvel, since securing planning permission for the six-turbine project in 2022.
After completing preparatory site investigation work last year, Hamilton-based OnPath has now chosen Glasgow-headquartered R J McLeod to deliver the balance of plant contract, which covers all the required civil engineering work as well as cabling and off-site highway construction.
It has also appointed leading global manufacturer Nordex has been contracted to supply and install N163.5/X turbines with a tip height of up to 200 metres, while energy consultancy Natural Power, which recently opened a new office in Glasgow, will be responsible for providing construction management services.

Northwest Europe Power Prices Plunge Below Zero on Strong Solar Output
The strongest solar power generation in Germany since September sent intraday power prices in Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands to below zero for the early Monday afternoon, in yet another spate of negative prices that undermine investment in renewable energy capacity.
With the strong German solar power output, the intraday prices for the hour from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. plunged to minus -$18.55 (-17.73 euros) per megawatt-hour (MWh).
The interconnected power systems in northwest Europe also led to negative intraday electricity prices in Belgium and the Netherlands on Monday.
Negative power prices, while beneficial for some consumers in some countries, generally discourage investments in new capacity as renewable power generators don’t profit from below-zero prices.
Last year, European wholesale electricity markets saw zero or negative power prices for the most hours on record, amid soaring renewable energy generation and a mismatch between supply and demand hours for solar power. This year, another record for most hours with negative prices is expected.
“Volatile wholesale electricity prices create uncertainty for renewables companies over the impact on revenues and future investment, underlining the need for storage and grid expansion,” the International Energy Agency (IEA) ) said in its World Energy Investment 2024?report?last year.

China Claims Commercial Nuclear Fusion By 2050 As Germany Goes Stellarator
Things are heating up in the world of nuclear fusion research, with most fundamental issues resolved and an increasing rate of announcements being made regarding commercial fusion power. China’s CNNC is one of the most recent voices here, with their statement that they expect to have commercial nuclear fusion plants online by 2050.
Although scarce on details, China is one of the leading nations when it comes to nuclear fusion research, with multiple large tokamaks, including the HL-2M and the upcoming CFETR.
In addition to China’s fusion-related news, a German startup called Proxima Fusion announced their?Stellaris commercial fusion plant design concept, with a targeted grid connection by the 2030s. Of note is that this involves a stellarator design, which has the major advantage of inherent plasma stability, dodging the confinement mode and Greenwald density issues that plague tokamaks. The?Stellaris design is an evolution of the famous Wendelstein 7-X research stellarator at the Max Planck Institute.
While Wendelstein 7-X was not designed to produce power, it features everything from the complex coiled design and cooled divertors plus demonstrated long-term operation that a commercial reactor would need. This makes it quite likely that the coming decades we’ll be seeing the end spurt for commercial fusion power, with conceivably stellarators being the unlikely winner long before tokamaks cross the finish line.

Elements Green signs ￡71.5m UK battery storage deal with Mitie
Renewable energy developer Elements Green has secured a ￡71.5m agreement with G2 Energy, part of Mitie Power & Grid, to design and build one of the UK’s largest Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
The site near Staythorpe Power Station in Nottinghamshire will hold peak capacity of 360MW and a total storage of 720MWh, the Staythorpe project will be capable of powering more than 95,000 homes for an entire day, underscoring its significance in the country’s green energy transition.
Mitie, through its subsidiary G2 Energy, will act as Principal Designer and Principal Contractor, overseeing the design and construction of a 400kV grid substation.
This substation will connect with the neighbouring National Grid Staythorpe 400kV substation and is expected to come online by mid-2027.
The facility boasts a planned operational life of 40 years, during which it aims to support the UK’s ongoing push toward a low-carbon economy.
A further sustainability commitment includes a 25.7% biodiversity net gain, achieved through 12 acres of landscaping that will feature woodlands, wildflower meadows and the planting of 129 trees.
Site preparation is already underway, with around 60 jobs anticipated during the construction phase.
Once operational, the Staythorpe BESS will significantly enhance the UK’s energy storage infrastructure and foster progress toward the nation’s net-zero ambitions.
