OIL AND GAS NEWS
Russian Upstream Oil And Gas Investment Set To Plunge By $15 Billion
Investment in the upstream oil and gas industry in Russia could decline by $15 billion this year as a result of Western sanctions, Rystad Energy has?calculated, saying the total for the year could end up around $35 billion.
The analytical firm noted that Russian upstream investments stood at $45 billion last year, increasing from $40 billion in 2020. Before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, upstream investments in the country were expected to rise to $50 billion in 2022, but sanctions have begun to bite and investment is set to decline substantially amid the exodus of Western oil companies from the country.
According to Rystad, investments would remain lower than normal until at least 2025 but this would likely affect smaller oil companies, while Gazprom and Rosneft will be able to continue spending as they were spending until this year, the company said.
The situation appears to be particularly worrying for the LNG industry, where several large-scale projects have been delayed because of sanction-related problems with technology and funding.
Swapnil Babele, Senior Analyst,Rystad:
"The war in Ukraine has cost the Russian oil and gas sector dearly, with project investments taking a significant hit. Covid-related disruptions in 2020 dragged down spending but this year looks set to be the start of a multi-year slump that will make the Covid years pale in comparison”??

Norway to postpone oil and gas licensing round
Norway will not issue licences for energy companies to explore for oil and gas in frontier areas during the life of the current parliament, which ends in 2025, its oil and energy minister told Reuters on Tuesday.
The decision to postpone the so-called 26th licensing round was part of the minority government's budget deal with the opposition Socialist Left Party (SV), Terje Aasland said in an interview.
SV wants Norway, the biggest supplier of natural gas to the European Union and a major oil exporter, to stop exploring for new petroleum resources to fight climate change.

RENEWABLE ENERGY NEWS
New energy storage technologies hold key to renewable transition
From pumping water uphill to heating thermal batteries, companies are trying new ways to keep power on tap.
As the world transitions from fossil fuels to renewables, a fundamental question remains: where do we get our energy when the wind is not blowing and the sun is not shining?
One solution is to store excess energy when the sun is shining and the wind is blowing — then discharge it when necessary. Large lithium ion rechargeable batteries are already being used to store energy to some extent, but “currently, battery technology only has a capacity of covering up to four hours”, notes Carlos Torres Diaz, director of power and gas market research at consultancy Rystad Energy.
Carlos Torres Diaz, Rystad Energy:
"There will still be periods where batteries will not be enough, so you need something else to back up the energy system. This is when long-term energy storage becomes crucial."

[UK] U-turn on onshore windfarms likely after Tory rebellion
Ministers will make an announcement on a ban on onshore windfarms in the coming days, including potential “tweaks” to the levelling up bill, in the face of a growing rebellion by Conservative MPs.
The culture secretary,?Michelle Donelan, gave the strongest hint yet that the government is preparing to lift the de facto onshore wind ban after the number of public rebels grew to 34 on Monday night.
The government?all but confirmed on Monday?that restrictions on onshore wind would be changed in the face of the revolt, led by the former levelling up secretary Simon Clarke and endorsed by Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, as well as the former chief whip Wendy Morton.
The U-turn on backing onshore wind projects would directly contradict a pledge by Sunak during his leadership campaign, but Downing Street has sought to frame it as government policy.

Energy crisis prompts desperate search for nuclear workers in France
A reliance on nuclear power should shield France from Europe's gas crisis but its ageing fleet of reactors is suffering and a skills shortage is also placing a new nuclear strategy in jeopardy.
French state-owned energy firm EDF has revealed plans for a massive recruitment drive to bolster the country's ageing nuclear reactors and build new power plants.
It is seeking thousands of specialist welders, pipe-fitters and boiler makers to fix its fleet.
The problem is that such staff are in short supply.
The company, which is also building the new?Hinkley Point C?and is behind the fledgling Sizewell C project in the UK, is battling to keep the lights on this winter across France and build resilience amid Europe's energy crisis.

EV and BATTERY NEWS
Europe's biggest battery storage system goes online four months?early
Operators have flipped the switch on Europe's largest battery energy storage system, bringing online a system capable of storing enough electricity to power 300,000 homes for up to two hours.
The facility, located in Cottingham, East Yorkshire, UK, was overseen by renewable power company Harmony Energy Limited and utilizes Tesla Megapack technology. The system can store up to 196 MWh (megawatt hours) of electricity in a single cycle and will provide balancing services to the energy grid while also allowing for fossil fuel sources to be replaced by renewable energy sources like solar farms and wind turbines.
The battery energy storage system was built adjacent to the Creyke Beck substation, which is where the Dogger Bank offshore wind farm is slated to go live next summer.
