OIL AND GAS NEWS
Russia's oil and gas revenue is reportedly set to boom 50% this month
Russia's oil and gas business is set for a windfall this month.
According to Reuters, Russia's oil and gas revenue is set to surge to $9.4 billion in June, up roughly 50% from the $6 billion it took in from oil and gas sales in June of last year. That's a big boost for the Kremlin, given that oil and gas revenues have made up as much as half of the nation's total revenue for the past 10 years.
The increase in revenue has largely been spurred by declining subsidies to Russia's oil refineries, which fell $60 billion from last month. That may encourage refineries to export oil and gas overseas for a higher price, as opposed to keeping oil and gas for domestic sales.
The revenue jump is also a product of Russia's ability to navigate around Western sanctions, despite harsh restrictions on its oil and gas trade.

BP CEO reportedly imposes hiring freeze, shifts focus back to oil and gas
new bp CEO, Murray Auchincloss , has implemented a hiring freeze and paused new offshore wind projects to focus more on oil and gas amid investor concerns over the company’s energy transition strategy, according to Reuters, citing sources close to the oil giant.
This shift contrasts with former CEO Bernard Looney 's approach, which prioritised moving away from fossil fuels.
Auchincloss has redirected efforts towards projects already underway, such as offshore wind in Britain and Germany, in favour of investment in new oil and gas assets, especially in the Gulf of Mexico and US?shale basins, the Reuters report claimed.
bp will also explore short-term returns from biofuels and other low-carbon businesses.
The company-wide hiring freeze excludes frontline and safety personnel, and some job cuts in renewables are expected. Auchincloss has also initiated a $2 billion cost-saving drive by 2026 and reduced the executive leadership team from 11 to 10 members.

RENEWABLE ENERGY NEWS
Europe’s largest renewable producer scales back plans for wind and solar plants
Europe's largest renewable power producer is scaling back plans to build new wind and solar plants because of lower electricity prices and higher costs.
Statkraft chief executive Birgitte Ringstad Vartdal , who took over in April, has pledged to “sharpen” strategy to cope in a tougher environment.
“The transition from fossil to renewable energy is happening at an increasing pace in Europe and the rest of the world. However, the market conditions for the entire renewable energy industry have become more challenging,” she said.
Although Statkraft is not listed, public markets have highlighted the falling demand for renewables.
The S&P Global Clean Energy Index, which includes wind turbine and solar-panel makers, has dropped 25 per cent since July last year, while ESG equity funds have suffered $38bn in outflows this year to the end of May, says Barclays.
Statkraft, which is owned by the Norwegian state and mostly produces energy from its vast fleet of hydropower stations, announced plans to slow capacity growth on Thursday
It now aims to install 2-2.5GW of onshore wind, solar and battery storage annually from 2026 onwards — potentially enough to supply electricity to about 2.5mn households. That compares with a previous target of 2.5-3GW annually from 2025 and 4GW annually from 2030.
For offshore wind, it now aims to develop 6-8GW in total by 2040, down from its previous target of 10GW.
“We still believe strongly in offshore wind and would like to stay in there, but we are reducing our ambition somewhat,” Vartdal said. Last year it bought Spanish renewable energy company Enerfín for €1.8bn.
Statkraft is among several European utilities to slow growth plans over the past year.?

EU announces €3bn boost for renewables
The European Union has announced nearly €3bn in backing for renewables projects across the continent.
It has paid out €2.967bn via the Modernisation Fund to support 39 energy projects in 10 EU Member States.
These investments will support the upgrading of energy systems, reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the energy, industry and transport sectors, and improving efficiency.
This is the largest disbursement to date via the Modernisation Fund, bringing the total spending to €12.65bn since January 2021.
The EU said the awards help Member States to meet their climate and energy targets and contribute to its long-term target of reaching climate neutrality by 2050.
The Member States benefitting from the first disbursement of 2024 are Bulgaria (€65.2m), Croatia (€52m), Czechia (€835.2m), Estonia (€24.1m), Hungary (€76.8m), Latvia (€26.8m), Lithuania (€59m), Poland (€697.5m), Romania (€1.095bn) and Slovakia (€35m).
The projects all focus on renewable electricity generation,?use and deployment of renewable energy sources, modernisation of energy networks?and?energy efficiency.

NUCLEAR & POWER NEWS
‘Real and growing’ threat to grid if Australia goes for nuclear power
There is no chance nuclear energy will get online in time to replace retiring coal-fired power plants and any delays in rolling out renewables will likely lead to higher costs and interrupted grid supply, the market operator has warned.
“The possibility that replacement generation is not available when coal power stations retire is real and growing, and a risk that must be avoided,” the Australian Energy Market Operator (Aemo) said in its Integrated System Plan (ISP). “The sooner firmed renewables are connected, the more secure the energy transition will be.”
Aemo’s grid blueprint, published Wednesday, echoed the draft version released in December. That report said all coal power stations would shut by 2o38 under Aemo’s most likely scenario, but new wind and solar farms need to double their current pace of construction to 6 gigawatts a year to 2050 to meet decarbonisation goals.

Stellantis boss Maria Grazia Davino warns UK production could end over EV rules
The maker of Peugeot, Citro?n, Vauxhall and Fiat vehicles, Stellantis , has threatened to end its car making in the UK due to electric vehicle (EV) production rules.
"Stellantis production in the UK could stop," the company's managing director MariaGrazia Davino said at an industry event on Tuesday.
The company makes electric vans in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire and had announced plans to also make electric vans in Luton, Bedfordshire from 2025.
But more needs to be done to spur consumer demand for EVs, Ms Grazia Davino said. If more electric cars aren't bought, manufacturers will be in breach of UK regulations.
UK law says fully electric cars, as opposed to hybrids, must make up 22% of all automakers' sales.
At present, just 16% of sales are EVs, according to the latest Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) data.
"The fact is that demand is not there," Ms Grazia Davino said.
But producers face fines of £15,000 per non-electric vehicle sold
This is more onerous than European Union rules which allow hybrids as well as EVs to count in CO2 emissions reduction targets.
Stellantis will make a decision on whether or not to end UK production in "less than a year," Ms Grazia Davino said.
"Let me be clear, I want to keep the production in the UK," she added.
