UK oil and gas sector faces $24 bln bill to plug old wells

British North Sea oil and gas producers will spend around 20 billion pounds ($24 billion) on dismantling over 2,000 unused wells and facilities in the ageing basin over the next decade, an industry group said on Tuesday.

The cost burden for plugging wells and removing platforms, in what is known as decommissioning, is set to rise sharply over the next three to four years as more fields stop production, Offshore Energies UK (OEUK) warned in a report.

The growing bill coincides with British finance minister Jeremy Hunt's?decision last week?to increase a windfall tax on North Sea producers to 35% from 25%, bringing total taxes on the sector to 75%, among the highest in the world.

OEUK estimates around 2,100 North Sea wells will be decommissioned over the next decade at an average cost of 7.8 million pounds per well, for a total of 19.7 billion pounds.

The proportion of spending on decommissioning in companies' budgets is set to rise from 14% in 2022 to 19% by 2031.

Over 75% of total decommissioning spend will be within the central and northern North Sea.

Ricky Thomson, OEUK Decommissioning Manager:
"The UK's decommissioning sector is snowballing and will continue growing for years to come, but this poses a challenge as well as an opportunity. The growth of renewables and demand for decommissioning services and expertise will create increasing pressure for resources.”??

European Gas Market To Remain Tight Until At Least 2024

Large volumes of new LNG supply are coming to the market this decade, but none of the huge export capacities currently under construction will make it in time to alleviate Europe’s tight gas market either in 2023 or 2024.??

The United States and Qatar, the world’s top exporters of LNG, will have a lot of new capacity after 2025, easing the potential supply crunch but unable to help Europe with a new wave of gas supply either for the next winter or the winter after that.???

Demand destruction amid high prices could reduce LNG consumption in the short term in both Europe and Asia. But even in a weaker demand scenario, Europe will need a lot of LNG to replace all the Russian gas it will have lost after the end of this winter and to build up adequate inventories ahead of the 2023/2024 winter.?

The problem is there isn’t much large-scale LNG supply coming either from the U.S. or Qatar until 2025. This leaves at least two years of a very tight global LNG market, during which Europe will scramble to import more and more non-Russian gas. High prices could be here to stay, at least for two more years.?

U.S. Renewable Energy Will Surge Past Coal and Nuclear by Year’s End

Renewables are on track to generate more power than coal in the United States this year. But the question is whether they can grow fast enough to meet the country’s climate goals.

Supply chain constraints and trade disputes have slowed wind and solar installations, raising questions about the United States' ability to meet the emission reductions sought by the Inflation Reduction Act. The Biden administration is banking on the landmark climate law cutting emissions by 40 percent below 2005 levels by 2030.

The Inflation Reduction Act's emission reductions hinge on the country’s ability to at least double the rate of renewable installations over the record levels observed in 2020 and 2021

John Larsen, Rhodium Group:
Every year we don't have capacity additions beyond the record is lost ground. It’s going to be that much harder to make that up over time. There is a point where we don't get to the outcomes we projected because we blew the first few years of the transition.

China produces world's largest 16-megawatt wind turbine

China's home-developed 16-megawatt offshore wind turbine rolled off the production line in East China's Fujian Province on Wednesday. The turbine boasts the world's largest single-unit capacity and biggest impeller, marking a breakthrough in high-end research and manufacturing to reach world-class levels.

With a propeller diameter of 252 meters, the wind turbine covers a swept area of 50,000 square meters, equivalent to seven standard soccer fields.

A single unit could produce clean electricity of 66 million kilowatt-hours per year, meeting the annual electricity needs of more than 36,000 urban households. Meanwhile, it will greatly save energy and reduce carbon emissions. It's estimated that it will reduce the consumption of coal by 22,000 tons and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 54,000 tons every year.

Qin Haiyan, China Renewable Energy Society:
"The success of the 16-megawatt wind turbine lies not only in its improvement in single-unit capacity but also in effectively promoting offshore wind turbine construction efficiency while lowering cost."

Russian attacks risked nuclear 'catastrophe' - Ukraine's nuclear energy chief

Russia risked causing a "nuclear and radioactive catastrophe" by launching attacks in which all Ukraine's nuclear power plants were disconnected from the power grid for the first time in 40 years, Ukraine's nuclear energy chief said on Thursday.

Ukrainian officials said on Wednesday that three nuclear power plants on territory held by Ukrainian forces had been switched off after the latest wave of?Russian missile strikes?on Ukrainian energy facilities.

Petro Kotin, head of nuclear power company Energoatom, said the vast nuclear power station in the Zaporizhzhia region of southern Ukraine, which has been out of commission since September, had also been disconnected from the grid on Wednesday and became reliant on backup diesel generators.

A game-changing new hybrid EV battery recharges in only 72 seconds

A new battery technology developed by?Swiss startup Morand?could see electric vehicle (EV) batteries charge in less time than it takes to fill an internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle at a gas station,?the company reveals.

The new technology, which can charge electric cars in only 72 seconds, is a hybrid system that uses technology from traditional batteries and ultracapacitors.

The startup says that, during testing, a prototype of its eTechnology solution was able to recharge to 80 percent in just 72 seconds, 98 percent in 120 seconds, and 100 percent in 2.5 minutes at up to 900 A/360 kW. The company also states that Geo Technology performed independent testing.
