OIL AND GAS NEWS
World’s top fossil-fuel bosses deride efforts to move away from oil and gas
The bosses of the world’s leading oil and gas companies have poured scorn on efforts to move away from fossil fuels, complaining that a “visibly failing” transition to clean energy was being pushed forward at an “unrealistic pace”.
The oil executives, gathered at the industry’s annual Cera Week conference in Houston , Texas, have taken turns this week to denounce calls for a rapid phase-out of fossil fuels, despite widespread acknowledgment within the industry, as well as scientists and governments, of the need to radically reduce planet-heating emissions to avoid the worst effects of the climate crisis.
“We should abandon the fantasy of phasing out oil and gas, and instead invest in them adequately,” said Amin Nasser, chief executive of aramco , the world’s largest oil company, to applause in the room.
Nasser dismissed projections by the International Energy Agency (IEA) that global demand for oil and gas will peak by 2030 , claiming that rising energy costs mean that people will require “the importance of oil and gas security” rather than shift to renewables.
“In fact, in the real world, the current transition strategy is visibly failing on most fronts,” Nasser added, criticizing solar, wind and electric vehicles for what he said was a minimal impact in cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
“And, despite our starring role in global prosperity, our industry is painted as transition’s arch-enemy,” Nasser complained.

Saudi Aramco To Expand Natural Gas Output Capacity by 60%
After scrapping oil capacity expansion plans earlier this year, Saudi state oil giant aramco is now poised to boost natural gas output by 60% by 2030, Reuters reports, citing an Aramco executive on the sidelines of the Houston CERAWeek energy conference.?
In the third quarter of last year, Saudi Arabia made?two significant natural gas discoveries ?in two fields in the Empty Quarter, along with the discovery of five reservoirs in previously discovered fields.?
At the Al-Hiran field, gas flowed at a rate of 30 million cubic feet daily. At the Al-Mahakik field, the gas flow was 0.85 million cubic feet daily.?
Demand for gas is seen increasing significantly amid a global energy transition, which has prompted Saudi Arabia to move more quickly to open up the development of unconventional natural gas fields. LNG demand is expected to grow by 50% by 2030.?
The Saudis’ growing interest in natural gas has also led to the Kingdom’s first acquisition in the LNG space earlier this year.

RENEWABLE ENERGY NEWS
76% of Africa’s energy could come from renewable sources by 2040
Over half of Africa’s people – about 600 million – lack access to even the bare minimum of electricity . The tough question to answer is how access can be extended without adding to global warming by relying on fossil fuels.
We – a team from Rwanda and Germany who work in the field of renewable energy scientific modelling – set out to find the answer by building the Renewable Power Plant Database Africa , the first on the continent. It’s a database of available open access data on hydro, wind and solar energy sources.
The database shows that some countries, such as Nigeria and Zimbabwe, have enough projects in the pipeline to potentially transition away from fossil fuels by 2050. And that 76% of all electricity required on the continent could come from renewable resources by 2040 . This would happen if the capacity of existing hydro-, solar and wind power plants were fully utilised and if all plants currently on the drawing-board were built.
The 76% from renewables would be met by 82% hydropower, 11% solar power and 7% wind power. Hydropower has been the main renewable energy resource to date, but declining costs for solar photovoltaics (90% decline since 2009) and wind turbines (55%–60% decline since 2010) mean solar and wind have potential to lead sustainable renewable energy options.

Spanish Government and wind industry sign Spanish Wind Charter at WindEurope 2024 in Bilbao
At WindEurope ’s Annual Event 2024 in Bilbao, Spain’s Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge Teresa Ribera, the President of the Spanish Wind Energy Association Juan Diego Díaz today signed the ‘Spanish Wind Charter’. The Charter identifies actions to accelerate the expansion of wind energy in Spain – and to maximise its social and economic benefits.
The Charter sets out six lines of action for the development of the wind energy sector and specifies the tools to carry out these lines of action:

NUCLEAR & POWER NEWS
Europe's pro-nuclear leaders seek atomic energy revival
Leaders from pro-nuclear European countries and energy experts called for a nuclear energy revival on Thursday at a summit in Brussels, seeking to rebuild the European industry after years of gradual decline.
The political push to expand nuclear - a low-carbon energy source - is part of the drive to meet Europe's ambitious climate targets . But it faces headwinds including a lack of investment and cost overruns and delays that have plagued recent projects.?
"Without the support of nuclear power, we have no chance to reach our climate targets on time," International Energy Agency (IEA) chief Fatih Birol told reporters ahead of the Nuclear Energy Summit in Brussels.
Nuclear fell out of favour in Europe over safety concerns following Japan's Fukushima nuclear accident in 2011, which prompted Germany to immediately shut down six nuclear plants and phase out its remaining reactors. The last three were shut down in April 2023.
But the need to find alternatives to Russian gas following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and the European Union's commitment to cut net greenhouse gas emissions 55% by 2030 has renewed interest in nuclear power.

EV and BATTERY NEWS
US battery storage smashes deployment records in Q4 2023
The US battery storage market shattered deployment records across all segments in Q4 2023 – a 101% increase from the previous quarter.
The US battery storage sector saw 4,235 megawatts (MW) installed in Q4 2023, according to Wood Mackenzie and the American Clean Power Association (ACP) ’s (ACP) latest “US Energy Storage Monitor” ?report.
For the first time, the grid-scale segment exceeded 3 gigawatts (GW) deployed in one quarter and nearly topped 4 GW. With 3,983 MW of new capacity additions, the fourth quarter saw a 358% increase year-over-year.
@John Hensley, ACP’s vice president of markets and policy analysis, said:
"Energy storage has unique capabilities to address grid resilience, with the ability to serve as generation, load, and transmission."
Vanessa Witte , senior analyst with Wood Mackenzie ’s energy storage team, said:
"Q4 2023 was extremely strong for the US energy storage market, helped by easing supply chain challenges and system price declines."
