OIL AND GAS NEWS
Shell shakes up climate targets as it plans to keep gas business growing
壳牌 has weakened some of its climate targets to accommodate plans to keep growing its giant gas business, even as it reaffirmed its long-term commitment to cut emissions to net zero by 2050.
In the first shake-up of its three-year-old energy transition strategy, Shell said the net carbon intensity of its products would fall more slowly by 2030 than previously planned and scrapped a 2035 target completely.
The changes reflect chief executive Wael Sawan ’s plans to keep oil production flat and expand sales of liquefied natural gas while being more selective about the types of low-carbon energy products it sells.
Sawan said the changes made it “more, not less, likely” that Shell would achieve its targets, but the revisions are likely to provoke some criticism, particularly from groups that already thought the company was not doing enough to reduce its environmental impact.
“This is not about trying to change a trajectory, we are committed to that trajectory,” Sawan told the Financial Times. He added that over the past three years, the company has learned that “the shape of the energy transition and the pace of the evolution in different countries is just uncertain”.
Shell had previously said the net carbon intensity of its energy products would fall 20 per cent from 2016 levels by 2030, 45 per cent by 2035 and to net zero by 2050.

Bonanza: 30 oil and gas projects costing $125 billion lined up for sanction in 2024
Final investment decisions could be taken in 2024 on $125 billion worth of major upstream projects hosting potential resources of 14 billion of barrels of oil equivalent, according to a report from UK consultancy Wood Mackenzie .
These findings reflect a resurgence in market appetite for investing in oil and gas developments after years in the doldrums.
WoodMac’s report — Class of 2024: Benchmarking this year’s upstream FIDs — states that up to 30 projects, each holding resources of more than 50 million boe, could be sanctioned, an increase from 22 in 2023.
“With many projects delayed or postponed, we expect operators to commit to more projects in 2024 than last year,” said Ross McGavin , principal analyst at WoodMac.
He said: “National oil companies (NOCs) in the Middle East will control the most projects, but the majors will be busy as well, particularly as they prioritise advantaged deepwater resources.”

RENEWABLE ENERGY NEWS
UK renewables industry concerned over government’s electricity market reform plan
The UK government‘s recent unveiling of proposed reforms to the electricity market has sparked controversy within the renewables industry, as Solar Energy UK and RenewableUK express scepticism and concerns.
The proposed shift to zonal pricing, aimed at restructuring the wholesale electricity market, is met with apprehension by industry leaders.
While zonal pricing theoretically aims to incentivise generation closer to demand and alleviate transmission grid constraints, concerns persist regarding its potential to introduce additional market uncertainty and inflate capital costs for renewable energy projects.
Ana Musat , Executive Director for Policy and Engagement at RenewableUK , said: “The consultation is still inviting views on whether zonal pricing can be feasibly introduced while maintaining investor certainty.
“However, given stronger locational constraints faced by projects – such as planning hurdles, including a de-facto ban on onshore wind in England or grid connections, the influence of zonal pricing on location choices will likely be limited.”
Gemma Grimes , Director of Policy and Delivery at Solar Energy UK said: “While the government has chosen to emphasise the potential role of backup gas power in its announcement today, the renewables industry is doing all it can to deliver a carbon-free electricity system.
“New, grid-scale energy storage can make this a reality by storing power from renewables, enabling us to use clean, affordable power 24/7, 365 days a year. The storage sector is set to grow leaps and bounds in the coming years, to keep pace with the renewables revolution.”

US approves grid connection for 810MW Empire 1
The US federal government has approved an agreement for transmission connection between Equinor’s Empire Wind 1 project and Consolidated Edison, New York City’s public power utility.?
The approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) will allow Empire Wind 1 connect to New York City’s grid through the Sunset Park Onshore Substation at South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SBMT).
The Large Generator Interconnection Agreement agreement will allow Empire Wind 1 to contribute 810MW of power into the city’s grid at Con Edison’s Gowanus substation in Brooklyn.?
“This federal approval marks the culmination of a years-long process,” vice president of Equinor Renewables Americas Teddy Muhlfelder said.?
“Con Edison is building the grid of the future to provide our customers with reliable, renewable, clean energy,” vice president of Con Edison System and Transmission Operation Walter Alvarado said. “We are pleased to continue our work with the team from Empire Wind 1 to connect this project to our grid and bring the first offshore wind energy to our customers in New York City.”???

NUCLEAR & POWER NEWS
Biggest expansion of nuclear power for 70 years to create jobs, reduce bills and strengthen Britain’s energy security
The government today outlines plans for the biggest expansion of nuclear power for 70 years to reduce electricity bills, support thousands of jobs and improve UK energy security – including exploring building a major new power station and investing in advanced nuclear fuel production.
In the 2 years since Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, the government has doubled down on security of supply to protect the country from price volatility and hostile foreign regimes and bolster the UK’s energy independence.
The Civil Nuclear Roadmap will give industry certainty of the future direction of the UK’s ambitious nuclear programme, on top of the government’s historic commitment to Sizewell C and world-leading competition to develop small modular reactor (SMR) technology.
The roadmap sets out how the UK will increase generation of this homegrown supply of clean, reliable, and abundant energy by up to 4 times to 24 gigawatts (GW) by 2050 – enough to provide a quarter of the UK’s electricity needs.
The plans include next steps for exploring a GW-scale power plant as big as Sizewell in Suffolk or Hinkley in Somerset, which are capable of powering 6 million homes each.
The government will also invest up to £300 million in UK production of the fuel required to power high-tech new nuclear reactors, known as HALEU, currently only commercially produced in Russia.
An additional £10 million will be provided to develop the skills and sites needed to produce other advanced nuclear fuels in the UK, helping to secure long term domestic nuclear fuel supply and support our allies.
The roadmap also includes a government ambition to secure 3 – 7GW worth of investment decisions every 5 years from 2030 to 2044 on new nuclear projects.?

EV and BATTERY NEWS
Volvo invests in Breathe Battery tech for 30% faster EV charging
沃尔沃汽车 has invested in UK startup Breathe Battery Technologies and will use its battery software to cut charging time for its next generation of electric vehicles by 30%, the two companies said on Tuesday.
The automaker did not disclose the size of the investment made by the Volvo Cars Tech Fund, the Swedish firm's corporate venture capital arm.
Breathe's technology should be available on new Volvo EVs within the next two to three years.
"This really comes down to reducing a pain point for customers," Volvo Cars Tech Fund CEO Ann-Sofie Ekberg told Reuters.
The investment in Breathe ensures "we get priorities and insights and also good collaboration... so we can be a first mover," Ekberg said.
A major challenge for automakers is that although rapid chargers can provide power to EVs faster, the software in those cars will often limit power intake to protect the battery from overheating or getting damaged.
Breathe CEO Ian Campbell said the firm's algorithm-based charging software provides greater visibility on the health of individual cells within the battery pack, allowing the EV to charge at full power while maintaining safety and without altering battery chemistry.
"This is the tip of the iceberg for unlocking what will be an awfully big change coming in batteries as they become more software defined," Campbell said.
