OIL AND GAS NEWS
World faces ‘staggering’ oil glut by end of decade, energy watchdog warns
The world faces a “staggering” surplus of oil equating to millions of barrels a day by the end of the decade, as oil companies increase production, undermining the ability of Opec+ to manage crude prices, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has warned.
While demand is forecast to peak before 2030, continued investment by oil producers, led by the US, would by then result in more than 8mn b/d of spare capacity, the IEA wrote in its annual report on the industry released on Wednesday.
This “massive cushion” of extra oil could “upend” the efforts of Opec+ to manage the market and usher in an era of lower prices, the IEA said, adding that the level of spare capacity would be unprecedented outside the coronavirus pandemic.?
“It is not the first time the oil markets would see an oversupply, but one important outcome would be downward pressure on the prices,” said Fatih Birol , the agency’s director.
He added the combination of slowing demand and rising supply “could have substantial implications” for oil companies. “It is time for many producers to look at their business plans, in my view.”
The Paris-based body, founded in the aftermath of the 1970s Arab oil embargoes to advise on energy security, said last year that the world was at “the beginning of the end” of the fossil fuel era. It has said demand for oil, natural gas and coal will all start to fall before the end of the decade amid the mass rollout of renewable energy and electric vehicles.

RENEWABLE ENERGY NEWS
[UK] No new oil and gas licences and huge boost to renewables in Labour energy plans
Labour has confirmed it will not issue new oil and gas licences for the North Sea as it sets out its plans to make the UK a “clean energy superpower”.
The party has put clean energy as one of its central missions for government as it seeks to draw dividing lines with the Tories on the climate and nature crisis, which it describes as the “greatest long-term challenge we face”.
Labour’s manifesto says the party will deliver a “green prosperity plan” to invest in the climate transition, that it claims will create 650,000 green jobs, cut bills and secure energy independence.
The manifesto confirms £8.3 billion for the publicly owned Great British Energy company which will invest in clean energy. There are pledges to double onshore wind, triple solar power and quadruple offshore wind.
It also backs new nuclear facilities, carbon capture and storage, hydrogen and marine energy, but confirmed Labour will not issue new licences for new oil and gas fields “because they will not take a penny off bills, cannot make us energy secure, and will only accelerate the worsening climate crisis”.
But following criticism, including from the Unite union over potential loss of jobs, Labour also insisted it will not revoke existing licences and that the North Sea will be managed in a way that does not jeopardise jobs.

18 MW Offshore Wind Turbine Installed at Test Site in China
China’s Dongfang Electric Corporation (DEC) installed an 18 MW offshore wind turbine at a coastal test base in Shantou, Guangdong province, on 5 June.
The model has a rotor diameter of 260 metres and a swept area of 53,000 square metres, and can generate 72 GWh of electricity annually, enough to power around 36,000 households, according to the company.
The core component of the wind turbine is an 18.X MW permanent magnet semi-direct drive generator, developed in-house by DEC, which says its new generator has low vibration, low noise, and a uniform temperature rise.
The transmission of the semi-direct drive offshore wind turbine has a modular design, and the shaft system, gearbox and generator are highly integrated, which improves the reliability and transmission efficiency of the transmission chain and has good grid adaptability, the company says.
According to DEC, its 18 MW offshore wind turbine is the largest currently installed in the world.
Back in 2020, the Chinese OEM marked a similar milestone when its 10 MW wind turbine, and China’s first with this capacity, was installed at Xinghua Bay Wind Farm Phase II, off the Fujian province.

NUCLEAR & POWER NEWS
Rolls-Royce SMR selected for Vattenfall’s Swedish nuclear plans
Vattenfall has chosen Rolls-Royce SMR as one of two contenders to deploy small modular reactors (SMRs) in Sweden.
This is part of Vattenfall’s strategy to increase nuclear capacity and support Sweden’s goal of achieving a fossil-free economy by 2045.
The selection process involved a thorough evaluation where Rolls-Royce SMR presented its strategy and nuclear technology to Vattenfall.
Sweden expects to generate an extra 100-250 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity in the next 25 years.
Rolls-Royce SMR is set to finish Step 2 and move into Step 3 of the Generic Design Assessment by the UK’s nuclear industry regulators this summer.
Rolls-Royce SMR Chief Executive Officer, Chris Cholerton, said: “Success in reaching the final two, in such a fiercely competitive process, reflects the benefits of our integrated power station design, our approach to modularisation and our use of proven nuclear technology.”

EV & BATTERY NEWS
Explained: Nissan's solid-state battery that could double EV range
Japanese brand's tech took 17 years to develop; battery units are half the size but can provide twice the energy
The manufacturer that brought us the first mainstream electric cars?could also be about to become the first to bring us the next big thing in EVs: a car with double the range for less money.
The secret lies in the much-talked-about solid-state battery technology, which, if it lives up to the hype, should yield batteries that are around half the size and weight yet deliver the same range as their conventional counterparts or, on the other hand, provide double the range for the same size of battery.
Nissan, which unveiled its game-changing Leaf in Yokohama back in 2009, this month showed off its new all-solid-state battery (ASSB) pilot production line, which is under construction at the Yokohama plant. The firm has also announced plans to have ASSB-equipped production EVs in a wide range of vehicle segments on the market by 2028.
The EV pioneer claims its ASSB technology will be a game-changer with the “potential” for around twice the energy density of today’s liquid-electrolyte batteries – in other words, as mentioned, half the size and weight for the same capacity of today’s equivalent.
