ENERGY LABS #3 ISSUE

Hey?? dear readers. Besides the industry news and facts, this week's episode of Energy Labs covers interesting topic - Rise of Renewables in cities. It's exciting to imagine how Renewables will impact the look of where we live. Hopefully, our future will be greener ??????

??Fun fact

Truly a great example of well-thought urban ideas.

In Aalborg, Denmark, a wind turbine blade was repurposed as a modern bike shed. (take a look at this amazing post by my colleague - Kate )

??Industry news digest

Portugal set to start up Europe's largest floating solar park

Built by the country's main utility EDP on Western Europe's biggest artificial lake, the shiny floating island is part of Portugal's plan to cut reliance on imported fossil fuels whose prices have surged since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The solar panels will supply 1,500 families with power or a third of the needs of the nearby towns of Moura and Portel.

The first group of researchers in the world (DTU - Technical University of Denmark ), have managed to use a quantum computer to perform calculations on a power system .

Mumbai international airport has become India’s first airport to launch Wind and Solar project to power up its needs.

The airport introduced the pilot program to ensure round the clock energy generation, harness maximum energy through wind power systems, while also enabling a highly efficient and low carbon future in the aviation sector.

Why an energy crisis and $5 gas aren’t spurring a green revolution

U.S. climate envoy John F. Kerry suggested that nations are falling prey to a flawed logic that fossil fuels will help them weather this period of instability, which has seen gas prices climb to a record-high national average of $5 per gallon.?“You have this new revisionism suggesting that we have to be pumping oil like crazy, and we have to be moving into long-term [fossil fuel] infrastructure building,”?he said ?at the Time100 Summit in New York this month. “We have to push back.”

??Educational checkpoint

Rise of Renewables in cities - Energy solutions for the urban future report

* Growing numbers of cities have set renewable energy targets, but these are concentrated (80%) in the world's wealthier, more temperate regions.

* Target-setting is most advanced in cities of 100 000—500 000 inhabitants, with larger cities and mega-cities using relatively low shares of renewables.

* Hydropower, bioenergy and waste-to-energy have helped cities cut CO2?emissions and meet targets for renewables.

* Large bioenergy and waste-to-energy plants can work in tandem with distributed networks of solar panels.

* Evolving turbine technologies could facilitate greater use of urban wind power.

* Geothermal energy, where available, offers valuable direct-use options.

* District heating networks can be adapted to incorporate renewable energy sources.

* Energy Labs is my personal laboratory where I share things I’m learning about the Energy sector. I work for Fluix, a company that works with some of the biggest names in the industry — Siemens Gamesa, Vestas, RWE, and others. Energy Labs comes out every week, so I’d love it if you shared the newsletter with one of your colleagues.
