Energy and Intention
I’m not one for denying reality.
When it comes to a healthy emotional and mental outlook, accepting reality is a key component. And as I write this, Victorian small business, in particular, has been assaulted with another lockdown on a weekend that many in retail and hospitality were counting on to recoup some of the lost revenue from last year’s debacle.
Denying we’re in lockdown would be denying this reality.
However, accepting the reality that is lockdown isn’t the same as buying into the negativity, pessimism and fear that can go with it. I won’t give into that ooga booga daily messaging again because it sure wasn’t helpful last year and it sure won’t serve me or those I serve if I allow that to permeate my being.
I found a way of being that served me well and I’m sharing it with you because I know it works.
Process. Staying in process.
Sales is such a results driven role that it can be easy to focus on the target, the next deal, the numbers. They’re all important because they’re all measures of progress.
Progress though – not destination points.
Because after the achievement of this target there’s the next one, and the one after that.
Sales people never pass go.
We never get to a point in time where we can simply set it and forget it.
Living by targets is hard.
Living in process is richer, more rewarding and actually drives the achievement of targets.
What do I mean by living in process? It might be more illustrative to let you in on how this relates to my day.
Each day for me is about doing and being. What do I have in front of me today?
Meetings, workshops, proposals, articles to write, programs to create, workshop resources…. I bring my whole self to each event with an intention of giving it my best and my full attention before moving on the next event.
And in so doing, I have created a way for myself to operate prosperously in the world by expanding my own locus of control (my attention, my preparation, my confidence in the quality of my work, the way I engage with others, my impact). There will always be so much “stuff” outside of my control that will be there anyway. I leave it alone.
Bringing my all to each aspect of my day, strengthens my ability to be truly present, to do a great job which in turn impacts on future opportunities.
And I love it! It’s satisfying. It drives results.
And it’s all stuff I can control.
Victorian sales leaders, sales teams, business owners, anyone responsible for revenue growth: focus on what you can do in the day ahead and give it your undivided attention, intention and focus. Then press repeat each day.
Lockdowns may come and go, premiers will do what they think will keep them in power but your agency to do what you can where you are with what you have is yours and yours alone.
Really refreshing article, Ingrid. Thanks for sharing these powerful tips with regards to what it takes to survive and thrive in these uncertain times... It truly is about making each day your own masterpiece, to eventually working towards the results we yearn. -Nick
