Energy Efficiency

Written by Erich Labuda , President Motion Services Division at ABB

Energy efficiency is core for us at ABB, and our participation at COP29 included key announcements that highlight our strong commitment to sustainability:

  • We support efforts to increase energy efficiency in industry, transport, buildings and other areas to advance climate goals and transition to a net-zero future.
  • We support an equitable energy transition that lowers energy costs for people, businesses and governments, and reduces energy poverty around the world.
  • We support the Global Renewables and Energy Efficiency Pledge made at COP28 to double the global average annual rate of energy efficiency improvements from 2% to 4% annually through 2030

Therefore, we are glad to notice that countries including the US, UK, Brazil, UAE and Saudi Arabia have pledged to increased global energy storage sixfold to 1,500 GW by 2030. They also committed to adding or refurbishing 80 million kilometers of electricity grids by 2040. This builds on COP28’s ambitious goals to triple renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency by 2030.

Furthermore, the African Energy Commission (AFREC) has launched a program to enhance energy efficiency across Africa, targeting key sectors such as buildings, transportation and industry. These initiatives aim to reduce energy demand and emissions while supporting sustainable development.

In addition, the Latin America Energy Organization (OLADE) announced a Regional Target for Energy Efficiency set by member countries to deliver the doubling outcome of the Global Stocktake and a regional agreement on No More Coal-Fired Power Plants in the region.

Finally, a coalition of countries, businesses and organisations, including Mission Efficiency, RMI and the Global Renewables Alliance, urged world leaders in Baku to commit to actionable measures to?unlock the energy efficiency investment?that is crucial to meeting climate targets.

At ABB, we leverage innovative, high-efficiency solutions to help our customers increase productivity while decreasing energy consumption. This is in line with the recommendations of the International Energy Agency (IEA), which prioritizes energy efficiency as a first driver, emphasizing, that every kilowatt-hour saved is one that does not need to be generated.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) there are 300 million industrial motors out there. Moreover, 45% of the world’s electricity is converted by industrial electric motors into motion. Additionally, it is estimated that less than 25% of these motors are equipped with variable speed drives, which optimize energy use by adjusting motor speeds to actual demand. The data paints a clear picture, but the adoption is not as high as it should be. By improving energy efficiency measures adoption, we can all ripe the benefit of a low hanging fruit.
