The Energy Council of Canada Concludes Two Successful Events in Vancouver
Energy Council of Canada
A non-partisan, resource & technology neutral organization promoting excellence in Canadian energy leadership.
On 6 February 2025, the ECC held its annual Canadian Energy Person of the Year award ceremony and dinner. The recipient for 2024 is Chief Councillor Crystal Smith of the Haisla Nation and Chair of the First Nations LNG Alliance. The afternoon preceding the ceremony, the Council brought together energy industry leaders for its annual review and forecast conference, Canada Energy Update.
Chief Smith has been instrumental in positioning the Haisla Nation as the majority owner of the Cedar LNG project on BC’s coast.
The Pan Pacific Hotel’s Crystal Pavilion Ballroom contained upward of 250 guests to express their support and admiration for the guest of honour. The event attracted 15 sponsors from companies and other energy organizations.

Colleagues, friends, and family either sent video greetings or spoke in person at the event, which was presided over by Howard Shearer, Chair of the Energy Council of Canada. Chief Smith spoke movingly of the challenges and sacrifices she has had to deal with to not simply move the project forward but do it in such a way as to ensure that the Nation she leads can benefit and flourish from this opportunity.
The Energy Council of Canada invited 7 commentators from industry associations, energy companies, and academia for the half-day event. Over 60 people registered to attend the conference and participate in the discussion.
The presentations reviewed the recent history of the energy sector and looked ahead to 2025 and beyond. There was a consensus among the presenters that increasing energy demand, electrification of the economy, the need for more energy infrastructure, and a response to the recent fundamental changes to the energy trading environment in North America are among the immediate challenges facing the sector.
