Here is a briefing on the Energy Charter Treaty …?
There’s a thing called Corporate Courts, which are quite pernicious.?Corporate Courts enable the largest & richest companies to sue individual countries.?They’ve been used a lot by mining companies, tobacco companies & energy companies.?A typical example would be the European fossil fuel based energy company, Uniper.?They are suing the Netherlands for having a green policy of phasing out fossil fuels.?Usually the company says that the national Government’s policy will reduce their profits, & they seek an enormous payout to compensate - sometimes running to billions of $/£/Euro. ?
?In this way big companies are holding back progress on tackling climate change.?The UK (London really) is a bit of a hub for specialists in finance & international law - so we’re facilitating quite a lot of this. ?
?the UK is a signatory to the Energy Charter Treaty, which enshrines the right of companies to set up Corporate Courts.?Global Justice Macc is calling for the UK Government to exit the energy Charter Treaty & ban corporate Courts.
?For me the most worrying recent bit of news comes from last November’s climate summit in Glasgow : COP26.?Denmark & New Zealand both admitted they had made smaller commitments to tackle climate change than they really wanted to - & the reason is that they are worried about being sued by fossil fuel companies through Corporate Courts.
